Arsenal Set To Sign Montenegrin Defender Savić

Arsène Wenger’s hunt for a young talented centre back has ended. Despite missing out on Fulham’s England Under 21 international Chris Smalling, he is set to wrap up a deal for Montenegrin Stefan Savić.

Savić has completed a 10 day trial with Arsenal and, according to the Blic Online publication, the Frenchman informed him yesterday that they would be be keen to keep him on. Talks are now on going with his club side BSK Borča for the transfer which would be completed in the summer.

The 19-year-old won the Montenegrin Young Player of the Year award for 2009 and he has rebuffed offers from Tottenham Hotspur and Birmingham City to arrive on trial. At 6’2 (188cm) he is an imposing figure yet many note Stefan for his adept passing range. He has made 10 League appearances for Borča, scoring once. The cultured prospect confirmed the deal yesterday.

“There were offers from Tottenham and Birmingham City, but once a call came from Arsenal, I had no more doubts. Wenger made sure my papers were arranged and my work permit was extended so I can be at more training sessions. A pre-contract will be signed on Thursday and then I will return to Belgrade and join BSK for their preparations. I will be staying with BSK until May.”

Arsenal are expected to pay around £100,000 for his services. Savić noted that Wenger has been particularly aggressive this week during training following the defeat to Manchester United, where he was in the stands to watch on. You can read the complete interview Here.

Savić’s arrival could signal the end for defender Håvard Nordtveit, who is interesting a handful of German clubs.

otherwise this means that bartley will go on loan for the rest of the season.

The guy has been great this year. And Nordtveit isnt great at reading the game yet, which is why he doesnt put in many tackles. It has nothing to do with his strength. Stop complaining.

Sorry I meant senderos x2 at the back than a partnership of nordveit and vermaelen. Even though i rate vermaelen. He has been very poor this season and doesnt even look like a bundesliga player. He´s lost his spot in a poor nürnberg squad. They tried him at cb for one game and he got totally raped by a very average striker.

Jerome Boateng is the cb we should be after he will be a great player. He´s 21 years old, a german international and 1,92m tall. He can pass cross header and can tackle without hardly giving fouls away. He can also play rb.
Subotic is good but i think boateng will turn out to be the better player.

On this money tip, I dont think Arsenal fans understand the actual size of this club. We are not as big of a club as Barcelona, Real Madrid or Man Utd. These 3 are far more massive clubs, as far as world popularity and income from merchandise and image avenues. Wenger is the guy the is transforming this club into that level but it doesnt happen over night. He built the top class stadium, is making us worldly known through our beautiful style of football, has won trophies, and is doing all this while mainting an extremely low budget. People just need to see reality, and Wenger is doing far more good then harm. But you can invest in the structure of a club and blow millions on transfers. Reality check people.

Cost of the First Team Squad

    Fabregas = £500,000
Merida = Free but we may have paid his €3.2m fine (although that may be on appeal)
    Philippe Senderos = £1.5 million
Johan Djourou = Free, signed when he was 15.
    Gael Clichy = £250,000
Robin Van Persie = £2.75 million
    Manuel Almunia = £2.5 million
    Emmanuel Eboue = £1 million
    Nicklas Bendtner = £200,000
    Vito Mannone = £350,000
    Armand Traore = £250,000
    Vassiriki Diaby = £2 million
    Theo Walcott = £9.1 million
    Tomas Rosicky = £6.8 million
    Alexandre Song = £1 million
William Gallas = Ashley Cole + £5 million to us
    Denilson = £3.4 million
    Lukasz Fabianski = £2 million
    Eduardo = £7.5 million
    Bakari Sagna = £6 million
    Aaron Ramsey = £5 million
    Samir Nasri = £12 million
    Andrei Arshavin = £15 million
    Mikel Sylvester = £750,000
    Thomas Vermaelen = £10 million
    Kieran Gibbs = Academy
    Sol Campbell = Free
    Jack Wilshere = Academy
    Carlos Vela = £550,000

Total First Team Cost = £84.9 million?

Compare that to Man U, Chelsea, Man City or even Tottenham

Sensible comments, Shane. It’s a shame that this isn’t obvious to everyone.

It partly explains why a few people get upset when “fans” come down on the youngsters – both individuals and the whole development process.

We’re depending on a significant proportion of our young charges to come good (either to help the first team or command a transfer/sell-on fee), and it really grates to read people slamming them, sometime before they’ve even made a first team appearance.

Nordtveit is the latest, but I’m sure he won’t be the last.

Also everyone blames Arsene for not buying major names but the truth is, since Wenger, we have had more top top players then we have ever had. Here is an example for people with less commen sense. Manchester United have had players like Bobby Charlton, Dennis Law, George Best, Peter Schmeical, Eric Cantona, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney. Real Madrid have had Di Stefano, Puskas, Zidane, Ronaldo..etc, and Barcelona has had players like Maradona, Cruyff, Ronaldinho, Romario, Stoitchkof, Messi, Ronaldo..etc. We had not had 1 player in this category of players. Bergkamp was the first but he played mostly under Wenger. Then Henry and Veira. Now Fabregas. Our history as far as having some of the greatest players ever to play this game, starts with Wenger.

These so called lists you refer to are almost always compiled by people who only have short term experience.
Perhaps the money could be better spent on new players rather than on inflated contracts for kids like Emmanuel Thomas who can afford £100,000 cars. I think you are missing the point, fans don’t want a complete new team, just to strengthen it where needed.

This season is the 3rd we play at the Emirates. During which we haven’t won anything but the Emirates and Amsterdam cups. Every year, Arsenal has a profit of circa 30 million pounds. PROFIT. But despite that we let 5 first team players out, and we’ve replaced them with more expensive players that fail to deliver. Who’s fault is that??

Despite not having won anything, and not being close to win anything (but the CL in 2006) we still have the most expensive tickets on the planet in any sport, the lousiest club tv, and Wenger still says he has no money. Of course it’s been hard to compete with other teams during the construction of the stadium, but just to remind you, we have a long term debt, so you’d be happy if he don’t win anything till we out-pay it…another 30 years or so?

Bigal…I have been watching alot of the old games and Arsenaltv at Arsenal.com…..When there is a majority of the lists for top 100 players of the century, dont be different people whether it be the players voting or whatever and none of them have a Arsenal player in them. That tells you something. Short term? Puskas, Stanley Mathews, etc arent exactly short term. The point was Wenger has been a part of most of the players that would fall into true World greats. You have to understand the difference between a “club legend” and the greatest players to ever live. Every club has club legends. Anyways my comment was made to the people that are saying Wenger never buys top players, and he should be fired blah blah blah. I agree on the fact that we need to strengthen a couple areas and I have been saying that forever but people still need realisation.

I’m done now because I’m being stupid and jumping all over a technicality here!:S lol. We will get back to the level we were at in the 30’s and 40’s. When we were BIGGER, yes BIGGER than Man United!! I think it can happen. A lot of pieces have to fall in to place simultaneously, but I can see it happening because we are building the foundation with which to build upon. Buying exspensive flops, I do agree with tho. It is weird that when he doesnt open the check book he still likes to buy someone of the radar instead of a more gaurentead thing. Once again, Overall Arsenal need Arsene. By the way, if he was an Arsenal fan, why did we not sign him during the war? That sucks.

we could also loose against chelsea united and still win. Did not Liverpool beat united 4-1 or something last year? United still won. Did not United loose or draw against the rest of big 4 last year? they still won title…

Sad..Its not about losing 1 game. It is about how many points you are behind and how many games are left. When we lost to Man Utd at the begining of the season, you statement would be true.

That is the standard of player Shane was talking about.

I consider myself a relatively young Arsenal fan – my heroes growing up were Paul Merson and Anders Limpar, but I think what Shane was saying is that we’ve had more players considered among the best in Europe, and named on the Ballon d’Or shortlist since Wenger took over.

I’ve got a lot of reverence for our history, but there’s no denying that AW hauled the club forward and has kept us close to the top at a time when the standard of competition has been higher than ever before.

All this on a limited budget and with long-term thinking; a number of premier league clubs are borrowing against TV money two seasons into the future, and here we are turning a profit, third in the league with a chance to close the gap in the title race this weekend.

Seems pretty good to me. And trophies will come, especially now ManU and Chelsea are rethinking their transfer policies.

Oneofus—he got it spot on. By the way I have recently been watching a lot of old games, and all the great players and teams I can see and it has changed my perspective of football. It is funny how we say certain players are the greatest ever, without even watching players from the past. I had never actually seen Puskas or Cruyff play. Without knowing history, you cant make judgement on it. I will say the player I believed to be the Greatest ever before I watched classic games , is the same player I still think is the greatest. Mind you, to me greatest player to ever live, meens how good you were at you peak. I choose Ronaldinho. After watching players like Maradona, Cruyff, Best, Messi, etc, they are all very similar as they just ran past defenders with great pace and ball control but what Ronaldinho has done to proffesional players I just ridiculous. To me if every great player played in 1 game at their peak, Ronaldinho would be the man that stands out.

If you havent seen the Robinho introduction at santos, check it out. That is what football needs to get back to. The joy of the game and playing for the club you love or the love of the game rather then just money. Bringing joy to the fans. That with the Robbie Keane intro are what football is about.

I find it funny that people say he was such a failure even though last year he scored 14 goals in the prem which was tied for 4th in the prem. He was 2nd in goals by a winger behind just C. Ronaldo.

“Yes he is a kid but so was Smalling. Now am i missing something here???”

Smalling is English and cost a lot of money? It’s sad that some people still think nationality and money guarantees quality. It doesn’t.

As this is an Arsenal youth blog, I wish people would take their bitching about the first team elsewhere – there are plenty of places to choose from at the moment.

You never know, this kid could be the business.
Dont think it could be the end of nordveit. If he has talent Im sure he’ll make it. His versatility is a huge plus. We could really do with someone who can cover DM & CB

Add AC Milan to Barca and Real, obviously. Even Bayen Munich and compare since 1960 and you can see Shane’s point and AW’s contribution (although Bergkamp was already here) and he’s only currently justified by the presence of Arshavin and Cesc). Arsenal were a medium-sized club in Europe that punched above their weight in the UK over the entire 20th century – most successful (consistent) league club in terms of final league position over 100 years. AW’s plan is to raise the Arse to join the top tier. We now have the ticket sales, the branding is improving, the respect across Europe, some trophies rusting in the cabinet. Just don’t have enough (how many does one need – six?) superstar players now to join the top tier (rather than just knock on the door as shown by European Finals and Semi-Finals and just making the top four each season). This has been hampered by the billionaires flowing into the game, and by Abramovich buying all the obvious Arsenal targets in the wake of Vieira, Bergkamp, and Pires/ljungberg/Reyes – Drogba, Essien, Kalou, Robben and Cech – all of whom were going for too much at a time when a stadium had to be built, even possibly Makalele but he would have cost a lot anyway playing for Madrid, and not to mention losing Ashley Cole. (I’d say obvious Wenger signings but it’s possible he would have bought none of these even at uninflated prices.)

The debate is whether he can get us into the top tier or not and keep us with the billionaires and Manure (with their fan base). Well, firing him is not an option or we will lose a lot of ground very quickly – too much will collapse too soon. So I keep supporting him and hoping the stars align and he pulls it off. Even as he fails, and currently he’s failing somewhat miserably to crack the top tier, either due to his tragic flaws (that Myles Palmer might be right about) or bad luck with injuries (AW’s own interpretation), supporting Wenger’s vision has been a great ride and although painful it’s also been better and more eventful than any other mid-sized club has even come close to achieving (with the possible exception of Liverpool with their European Cup). AW won’t be around for ever; I’ll appreciate him while I can, even though supporting the team nowadays doesn’t fill me with the elation of 2004, or 1998, or 1971 (unless I trawl down memory lane). It’s still a helluva soap opera to follow. Much better than the story of the Totts, Newcastle, Everton, Valencia, Fiorentina, Roma, Hamburg, Shalke, Aston Villa. The only mid to big sized team (not top, top tier) with more enviable consistent success than Arsenal have been Inter and Lyon. Even AC Milan and Bayern have had less success than Arsenal while Emirates is weighing on our shoulders.

Jesus you Wenger haters need to support your local team. Any true Gooner doesn’t care about just winning trophies, its about our club and supporting them through thick and thin. So please stop being so negative & fickle lads, get behind the team. Up The GOONERS EIE!!

@Jawbreaker, I don’t bother, I will support Arsenal even if it went to the 51th city league, but will the top players stay if we show no ambition year after year.

Financially, I don’t see any problem on Wenger’s managerial method. In fact, I think he has done a great job for us in terms of the financial aspect of his job. However, in terms of the football aspect of his job, there are some of his managerial methods that I would like to criticize:

    1) He shows too much tolerance towards players that clearly not up to their task (Aliadiere, Senderos & Almunia are some of the example). I mean, seriously do u really think they gonna have the same chance if they were playing for Liverpool, Chelsea & United?

    2) He believes that size doesn’t matter in football. Well, with all do respect, I don’t think so monsieur (I believe a lot of people too). Arsene has to admit (or realize maybe) that size does matter in football, it can help teams winning games.
Want some proof?? Just watch the video of Arsenal vs Chelsea back in November, u will have a solid prove..
I just don’t get it, this is a fact that almost every other manager would admit. I remember that a couple of years ago, Hector Cuper is moaning about the lack of height in Inter’s defense (Cordoba, Cannavaro & Materazi was their 1st choice back in a 3-4-3 formation). I also remember what happen to Barca a few years back when they play Milito and Puyol as their 1st choice CBs, their defense was so vulnerable. Loo at them now when they have Puyol and Pique playing as their CBs. In our case we need to put at least one tall & big defender in our defense to have an ideal CB partnership (e.g. Puyol-Pique, Lucio-Samuel/Lucio-Cordoba, Toure-Campbell)

If he can sort this things out, he will be a complete manager.

It sounds like Savic is really promising!! Wenger takes so much time in evaluating prospects, that he must have judged this young guy to be as good or even better than Smalling. That’s the only way he knows how to do his business, so I dont think we should question his judgement on this one! lol. I don’t know what some of this fuss is all about. And it won’t be the end for some of the english lads like Bartley or Ayling. If they are good enough they will make the first team. If they aren’t they aren’t. I know, the argument to that would be, that they shouldn’t have to compete against a guy from Serbia, but that is the nature of Football today and like we discussed earlier, it won’t change. Do you want the best players to make the jump from the youth squad?? Regardless of where they are born?? I think we are lucky to have such a competitive youth sector!! Chelshit’s is exactly that. Shit. Well maybe not shit but it isn’t as good as ours’. Liverpool isn’t worth mentioning, although I just did. The only “top 4” competition we have for turning out youth products is Man Untd. We’re doing just fine.
