Lansbury Makes League Debut + Wilshere Wraps Up Bolton Loan

Henri Lansbury made his Premier League debut for Arsenal this afternoon, replacing Theo Walcott with 15 minutes left in a comfortable victory against Fulham. Lansbury only returned to the Gunners on Monday, after a season on loan with Watford, where he made 37 appearances.

Lansbury renewed his contract with Arsenal at the start of the year and after an uncertain future, the tenacious midfielder is now on track for a fine career with the club. Arsène Wenger told the media last term that Henri would lead a new wave of promising English talent, and on the form he’s shown with Watford this year, and during his brief sub appearance today, he’s spot on.

Henri was involved in the move which setup Carlos Vela for the fourth, having previously had a cross looking for the Mexican cleared. The future looks very bright indeed for the England Under 19 skipper.

Elsewhere, Jack Wilshere completed his loan spell with Bolton Wanderers, playing the full 90 minutes at home to Birmingham City. Wilshere was involved constantly in the first half, and he should have won a penalty after clipping the ball against Liam Ridgewell for what looked like a certain spot kick.

Jack has made 15 appearances during his spell with the Trotters, scoring once. He is now expected back at London Colney for pre-season training, although Owen Coyle has already confirmed that he’ll be in touch with Wenger in an attempt to secure his signing for next season.

Agreed – was very interested to see him again. He also seemed to have bulked out quite a bit since I last saw him – looks more solid all round, relaxed and confident in his play.
Good to see Djourou out there again – was beginning to fear he would never make it back. Next season will be very important for him – let’s hope he’s over all the injuries.

I am very much looking forward to hearing what the critics have to say about the number of foreigners at the Arse next season when we could easily put 6 or 7 Englishmen (Walcott, Gibbs, Eastmond, Lansbury, Wilshere, JET and Campbell) in the side!

“Could easily put 6 or 7 Englishmen in the side”.

*could* being the operative word. The question is will we. And given Wenger’s already shown he’d rather play a ‘senior’ player out of position than trust one of our supposedly talented youngsters that tells me that either the youngsters aren’t as good as everyone thinks or that Wenger doesn’t trust english players.

      @RobM

Wenger doesn’t trust English players? Yes, that’s why we’ve been stick with Walcott on our right for the whole season, while someone like Vela (less pace, but obviously more talented) gets pretty much no chances.

Good to see Lansbury make his debut i really hope he makes it as he was always the shinning light of our academy until his illness. I remember when he was named on the bench in the Liverpool carling cup semi’s and that was years ago. Hopefully next year he will stay at Arsenal and make an impact from the bench in much the same way Ramsey has since he joined Arsenal.

They are nothing alike at all.
One is a glory hunter one trick show pony who play for himself,
the other one is a team player who uses his technique for the benefit of his teammate.
I also believe that Lansbury is not going to waste his talent like DB did.
He sound much more grounded and willing to work hard to get to the top.
I cannot see lansbury squandering all his salary betting on horse and dogs like the Spurs next reject did.

Its good to have all these local boys coming through. This is what the majority of us wants instead of these foreign breeds who lacks a fight and will never die for the club. Every successful club needs ‘player fans’ to move it forward. Unfortunately for us, too many weak foreign players for the past seasons haven’t help. I mean Almunia, Fabianski, Diaby, Denilson, Rosicky, Eduardo, Vela, Sylvestre are no trophy fighhting players.

We need true Artsenal fans in the team and happy that finally, we’ll get Gibbs, Eastmond, Wilshere, JET and lansbury in the team. They’ll also sell shirts with names that are easily recognizable.

There is a treasure of players in the 2008/9 Youth/Academy winning team and we must exploit it. Bartley, Ayling, Coquelin are also waiting to make a claim.

Even in current squad, team members who we can say are tireless, strong match winning mentality are – Cesc, Song, Sagna, Vermelean. We just need strong players english or non-english.

You mean “player fans” like Cashley? Or English players that have shown loyalty and commitment, like Bentley and Pennant?

Or, taking an example from another club, local “player fans” like Wayne ‘Once a Blue’ Rooney?

If anything, English players are MORE selfish and lazy, given how they’re led to believe in their right to first team football and high wages.

Agree Howard its not all about fancy footy…. you ahve to have the fight for the battle to win the title. Hopefully the players you mentioned are shipped out I’d add Traore to it and maybe disagree with Vela as I dont think he has had enough chances at Arsenal .

Whats annoying is Diaby has the ablity maybe if he had competition for his place he might turn up more often? knowing if he was underperforming he would be on the bench and as for Eduardo well I think he should be loaned out for all of next season in the hope he can rediscover himself?

Imagine Wenger travelling all the way to Brazil just to buy an unbrazilian player in the name of some Denilson ‘5 yards passes, falling down and failing to track back, Neves. His pace is like a donkey and can’t understand what Arsene saw in him. Another waste of 50k a week from struggling fans money. He was playing that crap when he was 18 but refuse to play Wilshere, Lansbury and others at the same age even though technically better.

Love for everything foreign is the root cause of our trophiless seasons. They have no heart to play for the team. They lack fight. Complete modern day foreign mercenaries.

Lansbury or Wilshere technically better than denilson?! Maybe Wilshere at one or two ‘techniques’ but not on all around talent. Maybe Lansbury is more adventurous; Wilshere certainly is. Otherwise you are having a laugh. Denilson’s only serious weakness is that he’s not quite athletic enough, and doesn’t know how to win enough battles, but he’s close enough to be a useful top flight squad player and let’s see once he’s arrived at 26. Then he’ll stop respecting reputations and have more confidence to be creative, one hopes. He’s important to have around, too, b/c he’ll help players like Wellington Silva bed in.

Diaby and Denilson are weak due to their personalities, nothing else.

Eduardo and Vela just need time and games, though those aren’t two types of players that you expect to battle anyway. Rosicky is a battler, but he has no form right now. I can only hope he and Eduardo can get back to how they were.

JET will make it as well as Lansbury, Gibbs and Eastmond. Then we’ll have to wait and see for the younger ones.

I was hoping he would take the free kick in the 93 miins but still great to see Vela on the scoresheet he makes scoring goal ridiculously easy. Really reminds me of David Villa hopefully he can become one inthe next 3-4 years.

Eastmond has impressed everyone from wenger to the commentators since he played for the first team. He is the kind of defensive midfielder that knows how to give pain and take it aswell. If he was french then everyone would have called him the next Vieira
Gibbs is the future england LB and there’s no denying that so there’s no point in worrying about him either.
Same goes for Wilshere, Tech9 and Ramsey all three of them are both too good to not make it.

JET I like him because he has an eye for a goal and the strength to muscle players out but you cant call him a striker or a midfielder or even a winger and that’s why he will either be a squad player at arsenal or a players for a mid table PL side.
Coquelin if he can the RB trade then I am sure he will surely make it into the first team aswell. He knows how to tackle, great technical player and maybe learn crossing aswell.
Gille Sunu, Sanchez Watt, Mark Randall, Gavin Hoyte all are good players but I really dont see any of them making it at arsenal. I reall dont
Norvedit and Bothelo havent played in england so I have no idea how good they are and how much they have progressed
Merida is leaving so dont even have to worry about him.

Next season will be very interesting with all our academy boys coming through. Competition for places will be very intense with Lansbury and eastmond getting ahead of everyone else right now. Bolton fan here. Having seen most of Wilshire’s games since joining us I have to say he will become a top player in due course. He is all energy, quick moving, quick thinking. At the moment he doesn’t always chose the best option and sometime runs into trouble, but he’s learning all the time.

At this time he’d probably be a bench warmer for you guys, getting the occasional bit-part game. At Bolton he’d get games most weeks. To that end Wenger needs to consider where Jack will gain most. I’d love to see him back next season. If he doesn’t he’ll always be remembered fondly and watched in his progress.

    Thanks for the loan.

I’m worried about losing Lansbury. Arsenal already have a very young established midfield (fabregas, Diaby, Song, Denilson, all young) and then Ramsey and Wilshere forcing themselves into the midfield I don’t see where there’s going to be any space for Lansbury for a few years. (Btw I don’t think Denilson should be part of that midfield as he adds very little but I have to list him as long as he’s here)

Fabregas, Diaby, Song, Denilson and possible Nasri. That’s five players for three CM places. Ramsey will be out for big parts of the next season and Wilshere will probably play on the wing or go out on loan again. There are certainly space for Lansbury next season as we are short for CM’s.

Lansbury will have to fight it out with Ramsey I think and Ramsey’s injury might have just given him the edge. It took Eduardo and Diaby two years just to get back in their pre injury form.
I think the world of DIABY I think he is a great player all he needs to do is become consistent and he has stayed inury free this year which finally showed his true quality. DIaby plays as box to box midfield and if you play week in and week out without break then you suffer a dip in form as you start tiring out and either dont do your attacking or the defending and that’s exactly what happened with him.
WIth a fitter squad and maybe a bigger squad and sufficent rest I think he can really become one of the PL best.
Denilson is really not cut for the PL you can see why wenger went for him but he’s suppose to play the DM role and for that you need to be a lot more physical and because of his size and lack of upper body strength he really cant do that in the PL maybe in brazil.
He might get more RUTHLESS when he gets older and bulk up aswell but in a 4-3-3 formation I wouldnt play him. AND the way Eastmond is going I think in a couple of years he will SOng replacement not Denilson.

    Coyle of Jack Wilshere
“I think the world of Jack. I think he’s a terrific footballer and he’s getting better with Premier League experience here,” he said.

“It’s no shame to not be in the Arsenal team as they have quality players and a fantastic manager.

“I’ll certainly be keen to try and do that but that will be Arsenal’s decision. But the reason for bringing him off in the last minute was to get that ovation because he was deserving of it.

“He’s earned that with how well he’s done at Bolton Wanderers and we’re delighted and feel very important to have had that.”

I hope Jack gets loaned out next year aswell he needs the experience and if coyle brings some technically better players into the Bolton then Bolton can really turn out to be a great team.

From what I’ve read around various forums, gossip columns, etc. is that Wilshere will go on loan to Bolton again for the 1st part of the 10/11 season and they’ll give us a reduced price on Gary Cahill in return. Whether that is true or not is anyone’s guess but I’d love to see a Cahill-Vermaelen partnership at the back. Not much would get past those two!

Denilson needs to bulk up in my opinion and get meaner that’s what we expect for DM players dont we. Song has done great this season because he has bullied midfielders all season long and intercepted balls at the right moment. Denilson I think can get the ball back from a opposition player fairly while Song fouls him. BUt Song can bully players and can really command the midfield but Denilson gets bullied in most game and when you looks at all the great DM players Vieira, Keane you dont expect them to get bullied.

Denilson is same age as Gibson and Evans at United. I do not think he stands down to any of those two what comes talent. Difference is he has played alot more matches and thus has exposed his “young age” alot more. Denilson would be a good squad player for most top 4 teams and a starter for top 5 to 8.

Not to mention we have someone like Zak Ansah in the youth system who is from London, been here since he was 9, is a manc and hates Arsenal. Two days ago when Benik Afobe won the Player of the Month, there were a selection of comments saying he should be our new number 9 etc. Jay Thomas has been called a future first team regular and Emmanuel Frimpong the new Essien.

I don’t think there’s any bias at all, and I’m sorry if you feel that way.

First great to see lansbury coming though. Wenger obviously isnt playing him just for fun – its to get his debut out of the way with less pressure than at the beginning of the season next year.

Second just some ignorant and borderline racist comments here. Wenger is no racist and he plays the best players. Sometimes he has given british players more playing time than they might otherwise get. For example Walcott has been doing extensive on-the-job training and has been quite inconsistent but has not been benched the way say Bendtner has or simply sent packing like Senderos.

So spare us the nonsense. Wenger wants the best players and he plays who he thinks can help him. Clearly he is finally seeing the youth players he has set up come through and its good to see so many are english, but they must perform too otherwise we have nothing.

I hope Lansbury and Wilshere gets loaned out again next season for hald a year; coming back in Jan. They will be older, wiser and experienced, ready to assist when the toll on the first team kicks in.

I think Lansbury should be loaned out for the entire year but we can surely use Wilshere in the second half of the next season.
ANY IDEA WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO NACER BARAZITE?
If he stays fit maybe he might go on loan to a PL side.

Why does everyone keep saying Wilshere can be used in the future. The boy is ready now. First game of the season he needs to be on the right side of our front 3.

player out:fabianski(certainly),silvestre and gallas(both out of contract),eduardo(loan him out to let him gain back the confidence he used to have when he just joined arsenal),arshavin(traitor, why keep a player but will just always affect the team chemistry although he is good)
player in:hart, cahill, chamakh, suarez or any other player that arsene wenger thinks can replace these four players

P.S.btw,mr. wenger can consider loan a few players out to let them get some playing time and come back in top form on january such as(coquelin,jet,traore,nordveit,gibert/hoyte and mannone) for final sprint during the end of the next season.hopefully to primier league team like west brom or the watsoever championship playoff winners.

The thing that impressed me about Lansbury was that he comes on for his first game for Arsenal this year and every single pass was perfect. Of course he didnt take over the game but I just thought it was pretty impressive for him to go 19 minutes and not make 1 bad pass.

Concur with you there: that IS talent, regardless of what you may hear from Arsenal’s nascent anti-youth groups that have been gradually gaining traction in the online fan community. Young players have become almost a taboo for online fans unless you’re on YoungGuns or Jeorge Bird’s site. People have mistaken premature predictions of success for hyperbole. Apparently we’re only allowed express excitement about older players. The thing is, almost all of the under 24 year olds we have in the first team are outstanding, prodigious talents, and just because our last few years have been – arguably – failures, that does not mean we should dismiss an entire age group purely out of exasperation.

Incidentally, I wonder whether Arsene is scouring the world for a reserve right back at the moment. Surely Coquelin is only a temporary measure to cover the deficiences of Hoyte and Gilbert, facilitated in part by the tremendous form of Eastmond in Central Mid that forced Coq away from the position.

I think we will sell one RB probably Sagna to Juve or Inter or whoever this or next year and buy Van Der Wiel. I like him as a player and he will be a good addition he’s also young with plenty of experience and as tall as Vermaelen so good addition for me.

Only idiots would call the last 3 years a failure. We built a stadium, managed to stay in the champs league on a budget and are paying off the loan very fast. Only Wenger could do what he has done in the last few year. You have every team in the prem spending more money on transfers than you and you still compete and finish in the top 4 every year. Honestly in 10 years when the clubs is running on huge profits because Wenger made a sacrifice of his own ambitions to set the club up for long term success, hpefully he gets the full recognition he deserves. Mourinho, Fergusen, Redknapp, etc would have never made that sacrifice from their own self glory chasing to take 5 years of there career so that the club could build a stadium for long term success and there is no way that any of those other coaches could still finish in the champs league every year on that budget. When you think about it, it is really more impressive than any title Mourinho wins by spending millions and millions of dollars.

Van Persie: We need to toughen up. We need to make it clear to people

Dutch striker Robin van Persie insists that Arsenal need to toughen up next season if they are to challenge Manchester United and Chelsea for the title.

Arsenal ended the season in third position, eleven points behind champions Chelsea and having lost nine games in total, a run which included disappointments home and away against both the Blues and Manchester United and also defeats at Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Sunderland, Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers.

Despite the statistics Van Persie, who has only recently returned after six months sidelined with an Achilles injury, believes that his Arsenal teammates have the requisite belief to mix it with the Premier League’s more physical sides and should take heart from their 3-1 win at Stoke City’s Britannia stadium in the aftermath of Aaron Ramsey’s horrific injury.

Speaking to the Arsenal official matchday programme, the 26-year-old stated:

“I remember the Stoke away game, when Aaron Ramey got injured –that’s the sort of response you want the team to show in every game. I was watching at home and was so proud with the way the team stood up.

“I was dying to come back to fitness, I was working really hard at that point I thought we were going to win the league because we had looked like champions.

“We need to show the spirit we showed against Stoke in every game. I just think we need to toughen up. We need to make it clear to people: ‘if you want to play football, we can play football. If you want to play hard, we can play hard.’

“We can do that, we have it within ourselves, but we need to do it consistently, because if we don’t, we lose points and give the wrong message.”

I know this is Van Persie and he’s injury prone but he said exactly what i want to hear.
“If you want to play football we will play football if you want to play hard we will play hard.”
thats what wenger and all arsenal players should be saying I dont want arsenal players to break any players legs but make sure if they try to play hard with us they are stretchered out of the Emirates.
Wilshere does this on a regular basis he knows he’s small and can be intimidated so he intimidates them before they can intimidate him. I still have a clip of Wilshere bullying Terry and Alex

Arshavin ———– Chamak ————- Van Persie
      ————————– Fabregas ————————-
      ————– Melo/Diaby ———- Song ————–
      Clichy —– Vermaelen ——– Cahill ——- Sagna
      —————————– Green

GK – Sell Almunia or Loan Fabianski and then buy Robert Green. Good players and Wojeich can take over in a couple of years and Green can become second choice.
CB – Cahill is a very good choice, strong, powerfull, tall and we have a good relation with Bolton. Maybe Wilshere and Vela on loan to bolton
DM – Melo might be a good buy since Diaby or Denilson are not ready yet for it yet. Melo is optional maybe not with all the talent we already have in midfield
ST – Chamak is already coming.
Not more 30 million of spening and we can recoup some by selling Eduardo and either Fabianski or Almunia. We already should have money left from selling toure and Adebayor

For one, Van Persie is the center striker. For 2 Bendtner is better then Chamahk and next year he will only get better, Chamahk has been added for depth and height and for different scenerios. He is not a first choice player but depth. As for Right wing, I would be suprised if we added someone. I hope for Hazard or Zarate everyday but we will see.

    hi folks,
well let me make it clear…..i have seen lansbury play many times so i know him very well and i’m expecting great things from this lad ….but he ain’t ready for arsenal yet , i mean i watched watford 3-4 times this season and henri was their best player on the pitch (as MU’ cleverley) but i didn’t played well against top team like newcastle,WBA or nott forrest…..particularyh against newcastle he struggled to impose himself and loose almost all the battles against alan smith….Lansbury is a good player who could came great one day but he really need to wook on his physical presence and pace ,strenght etc…….his technique and pass range are sublime “arsenal’s style” but henri can only play in the middle of the middfield and to play in this position he really need to improve his physical presence.
For me right now lansbury is just like denilson
I see many of u guys don’t know than JET is a striker!!!!! SO HE COULD PLAY WIHT LANSBURY CAUSE THEY DON’T PLAY IN THE SAME PLACE ANYMORE!!!! Have u ever watch doncaster play this season?? I really don’t appreciate people who talk without knowing what they are talk about…….jay emmanuel-thomas play up front now so stop to put him against lansbury !!!

I think we all know that he plays in a attacking postioning either on the wings or as a striker but if he has choosen his correct place as a striker then he will have some serious competitons from Vela, Bendtner, Walcott, Barazite, Wellington Silva, Nasri and I dont see him winning it.
Good luck to JEt but as a striker it wont happen for him I think.

Thanks for telling these people that. JET is being transformed into a target man by the Arsenal coaching staff. I wouldn’t be surprised if they requested for O’Driscoll to play him there. He has played up front or as an attacking mid just behind the front man since he’s been there i believe.

Andrew, in this article alone, you have dismissed JET’s chances of making it at Arsenal. You have even said something like how you don’t know how to explain it but he just won’t make it at Arsenal. You have no valid points. Yes, you may, someday, be proven correct in your assumption but i believe JET will make it here. The kid is a born winner and leader. You can’t teach or coach that. Arsenal will be very stupid to allow him to leave.

As for what you say about Lansbury, nieno, yes, you are probably correct but i’ve heard from quite a lot of sources (didn’t actually see it myself) that when Chelsea spanked Watford something like 5-0 in the F.A Cup earlier this season, Henri was head and shoulders above every other Watford player on the park that day, including their rightful player of the year, Cleverley.

    • May 10, 2010 at 11:20 pm

Because football is a team game and his team wasnt very good so of course he wont look as good verse better team. That kid could play next year with the Arsenal squad. I think you have to take in to consideration that there will be some player burn out because of the world cup so a deeper squad will be needed.

NIENO Henri lansbury seems to have bulked up he looks more physical now. Playing in the championship will toughen him up but hes 19 still got plenty of time.

I would say lansbury is more stronger than denilson, nasri.

JET did look impressive for arsenal when he played against Stoke but i dont think hes a target man i think hes a playmaker off the striker like a riquleme type build a team around someone

I think Jet has a big chance to make it. I’d rather play him as an attacking midfield though. He could become a lampard type of player, with more finesse. I really like this player, he makes things happen, the fact he’s never picked for England is a massive joke.

Lansbury can make it too, even if the competition for places is going to be extremely hard. He has a fantastic right foot, now he needs to improve on his dribbling skills and ability to keep the ball. Right now Ramsey or Wilshere (who will eventually play in the middle) are better at that. Physically he is way stronger than people seem to think, a bit like Gerrard, quick, powerful and strong. that’s one his strength IMO

I am just hoping ( i doubt he will do this though), that Lansbury doesnt do a “Mark Randall”. What i mean by this is Randall played against was it Sunderland in the last game of a couple of seasons ago? He played really well when he came on and i was excited about this prospects he even scored a goal (which was wrongly ruled offside). I feel sorry for Mark he seemed to have so much potential and i dont know where it all went wrong. I really hope Lansbury makes it as hes Arsenal through and through and would be good to have a few local lads in there.

i think it speaks volumes that he was named on the bench in the last game ahead of JET. I know it was a nothing game and Fulham were not at their best, Henri did what was asked of him and did it well. He wants games now for Arsenal and i think next season he will be a main Carling Cup man and get a few sub bench appearences, then go from there. Will be nice to see more Englishmen in the first team. Cant wait.
