Video – Jay Emmanuel-Thomas V Sturm Graz

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas earned plenty of admirers during Arsenal’s 3-0 win over SK Sturm Graz. The versatile youngster came off the bench at half time in Austria and turned in an exciting and all action performance.

Emmanuel-Thomas spent time on loan with Blackpool and Doncaster Rovers last season and is being head hunted for a third loan spell by a selection of Championship clubs. Jay has been impressing in recent training sessions, he even scored in a training game yesterday, as his side ran out 2-0 winners against a team made up of the likes of Bacary Sagna, Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri.

Check out the highlights of his performance against Graz below.

I think he should always play right winger, that left foot of his is deadly and you dont really need pace to beat defenders when we play so high up

He is better than Walcott! Start him ahead of Walcott any game please. Let him or Lansbury, wilshere or henderson play ahead of walcott. there are so many better options than walcott. I can’t believe walcott is still in the team and get so much playing time.

JET and Lansbury got end product. Thats not what eboue and walcott got. Eboue got link-up play which is so important for the team so he can still play ahead of many. But JET, lansbury and wilshere will learn fast cus they are very intelligent footballers. They got better link-up play than walcott will ever get. and thats a shame because he has been in the team for so long.

Yes Wallcott Maynot Be The Best Football Minded Player, But With his Lightning Pace He About To Create Chances Just By Pure pace!!!

      I love Walcott
      the guy has great pace
      he’s technically brilliant
      he can dribble
      BUT
his crossing is actually getting worse and he needs to learn to find players until he does that all the good things about him are useless

he’s a winger he is played in the wide areas and he needs to cross and do a good job off it

walcott is a hundred times better than henderson and lansbury. Walcott in the 2 preseason matches was impressive which is quite the opposite with lansbury, who has been disappointing. just watch, this season walcott will be the star of the show for arsenal.

Saying JET over Walcott is a fair opinion because they both play the same positions and argubaly JET has been the better player in preseason, but then bringing Lansbury and Henderson into the argument is too far.

Neither play on the right wing (I know Lansbury has before but not the 4-3-3 winger) and Henderson hasn’t even touched the first team XI yet whereas Lansbury has at least come on as a sub.

Walcott would be completely fine with me if people finally understood he’s a super sub and not a starter. He simply isn’t anything special as a starter and his pace would be amplified so much more if he always came on in around the 70th minute. Walcott vs. tired legs would be unstoppable! Have someone like Wilshere whose more creative start in his place as he can affect the match in a number of ways other than his pace and then throw on a completely opposite player like Walcott who will just burn people down the wings and create chances.

Of last season’s loanees and this preseason’s youngsters, JET is second only to Jack Wilshere, who is our most gifted youngster.

JET is behind Ramsey and Wilshere but, considering Ramseyis injured, Cesc is tired, and we consistently suffer a freakishly high number of injury problems, the 1st team is a real possibility for him at the start of this season.

JET’s biggest fault is not releasing the ball quickly enough, but he did much better in this regard against Sturm. It’s ironic that this is also Diaby’s biggest problem. The two are comperable in size, skill level, and the misguided and unfair skepticism that many AFC fans hold for them.

I’m not sure what so many fans are seeing when they mention Lansbury as a first team option. He was terrible against Barnet and, with the exception of a fine finish from a goal made by JET, was largely ineffective against Sturm as well.

Lansbury was also medicocre, at best, all season with Watford. I don’t understand the basis from which so many fans sing this kdi’s praises as if he’s something special. He is very much in the Pedro Botelho phase of his development. He just doesn’t look good enough for Arsenal and doesn’t seem ready even for lower level Prem clubs. Maybe his fortunes will change in the remaining preseason matches but, like Jay Simpson, aside from finishing a sitter, he hasn’t impressed at all so far int the preseason. Still though, I trust AW’s decisions about the youngsters, he seems to believe Lansbury has something to offer. I hope he is proven right!

I dind’t think Hendo was very effective in the Barnet match, but I did appreciate his confidence on the ball for an 18 year old. There isn’t a lot to go on so far, but I would still rate him ahead of Lansbury at this point in the preseason.

Watford fans mostly disagree with you. There seems to be a consensus that after an average start he became the second best player in that team, behind another loanee, Cleverly from Man Utd.

Besides, is it really necessary to slag of a youth player when you’re praising another one?
While Lansbury hasn’t been able to live up to the hype generated by some comments from Alan Smith if I recall correctly, that doesn’t matter…
Him and Emmanuel-Thomas both seem to have a lot of talent, try rooting for them both. I’ll be happy if either one succeeds.

      JoseF,

“I’ll be happy if both succeed.”

Listen, so will I. I have nothing against Lansbury. He’s an Arsenal kid, so I’m down for him to do well. What I don’t get or support is rating players beyond what they’re doing on the field and this seems to be an epidemic with young Lansbury.

Hey, AW likes him so that says a lot, but unfortunately, it’s saying a lot more than his play on the pitch has done so far.

I understand your point about Watford fans calling him “the 2nd best player at Watford”, but somehow that phrase doesn’t fire me up much…

JET ddint do much in the barnet game but he did create all the chances in the second half against Sturm Graz
I want JET to be in the first team but he is not a midfielder he plays an attacking role of either as a winger or a striker

maybe Eduardo leaving the club might help his chances but for some reason I dont see it happening (and don’t ask me why because I do like JET’s ability)

and on Lansbury he was good against Barnet and good against Graz but nothing special and ramsey fit will get the nod over Lansbury everytime
but ramsey isn’t fit right now and Lansbury might get his chance this year int he first team

I really hope we can keep Lansbury (until Ramsey’s fit), WIlshere and Eastmond in the first team this season. It Will really boost our midfield
Nortvedit is certain to be in the first team

JET, barazite should go on loan to top flight either in england or in scotland or a dutch club

I really liked what JET did in the game, but I can’t help but feel a lot of the stuff he did to beat defenders was a result of his athleticism which definitely won’t work in the EPL like it did against Sturm Graz. I hope Bartley can go to a attacking championship side this reason rather than a defenisve minded side
Tech9 is staying in and around the first team and hopefully mannone can go on loan to serie a club

JET did look great with ball
our away kit does look horrible lucky I look good in it
I cant believe how many long balls we play upto him and how well he controlled it
but JET did look languid a few time and passed the ball or had his pass blocked by the defender a lot of times other than he did look awesome espeically when he was on the right and only the LB marking him

but still where will he play
Target Man – Chamak, Bendtner, Van Persie
    RW – Walcott, Nasri, Rosicky

although I still think Chamak will be upfront and Van Persie on the right

PS just a mail from my mates in austria and they were blown away with Koscielny and his defending on chamak
and according to them he’s physically ready for the PL
although Almunia again did fumble the ball twice which is not a good sign going into the season

No hard evidence, just a strong feeling that Almunia, if he stays with the club will not be our #1 by the beginning of November. The problem is that I don’t feel Mano or Fabianski are ready. And the best of the bunch, Tech9, is bound to make exasperating mistakes as he adapts to the rigors of playing every four or fave days at the Prem/European level.

It’s a tough call to be sure but I’m willing to let our young gifted keeper make his mistakes and learn the ropes. Hopefully, he’s a quick study and sooner rather than later we’ll have a world class keeper as our #1…finally!

      RW – Walcott, Nasri, Rosicky
That’s hardly inspiring. Theo really shouldnt even be considered among the 1st team players and rosicky is likely to be injured for large parts of the season. Van persie might play on the right with chamakh up front, but again he will likely be injured for large parts of the season.
So JET or wilshere should really be able to get a few chances at RW this season, although theo will certainly be in the side when hes available, for whatever reason, and eboue might also be given the role ahead of the youngsters depending on the opposition. At least eboue can be fairly effective, though.

I like JET, i think he gives us something different. The trouble is where will he play in a 4-3-3. Well my answer to that is i dont think he will play in a 4-3-3. By giving us something different he is likely to get played when 4-3-3 is no longer required (i.e the game is safe) or has been abandoned (i.e. plan a has not worked) You have to say imagine a change where we are chasing a match and bring on JET, Vela & Walcott with 25 to go! I think these 3 working together would scare defences shitless. The three of them could swap over constantly, each having a go down the right, the left and the centre. Defenders would not know which way to turn. I believe we should look at Walcott more down the centre and on the left. He clearly cannot make it on the right side of a three or the Right wing of a 4. If i recall he played on the left side for Southampton and i think he could be a junior version of Arshavin cutting in from the left, it may lead to him filling that no.14 shirt the way it should be. I am more than happy with our attacking options. RVP, Chamakh, Arshavin, Bendtner, Walcott, JET, Vela. If you add to that Rosicky, Nasri, Wilshere, Barazite, Simpson, Watt, Sunu & Murphy then we certainly have enough talent to fill the 3 spaces and can totally justify the sale of Eduardo. If we could just go German and go for Mertesacker, Ozil (£20m for the pair being quoted this morning), Khedira and Neuer we would have a team and a squad ready to conquer all, i would go as far to say if we could get those 4, Cesc would be convinced of our intentions, if he wasnt then we would be in a whole better position to cash in.

      bc,

Great points. I like the idea of bringing on those three when matches are either won or in need of an injection of new blood. I would like to see this happen. My concern with the idea is an old one, however. Theo just doesn’t seem to be developing at the rate we all would like. When he comes on much of his game is there…the pace, the desire, the work rate… But the decision making, the quality of thought and the poise just aren’t there in the way I would expect after so many years under AW’s tutelege. I am nowhere near ready to give up on him and i suppose the only way he can gain these qualities we all want to see is to play, but they simply arent’ there yet. Vela and JET…absolutely! Love to see them used in the way you describe.

Re. The Germans. Khedira seems a no-go because he’s probably going to Real Madrid or staying at Stutgart. Neuer looks to have a great future in front of him but at only 24 Szczesny would almost be rendered surplus by Neuer’s signing. I would rather buy an older keeper and give Shez time to develop into our long-term #1. Mertesacker might be a very good buy as our defense will likely still tell the story of our success this season, and frankly, I still don’t think we are strong enough down the center.

Ozil would be the best buy of the bunch, IMO. Yes, on some level he presents the same problem as Neuer as he would probably immediately be ahead of Ramsey, Wilshere, Lansbury, etc. But I think the kid is a special talent and could essentially slip into the Rosicky role seemlessly and make Thomas surplus plans. The others could then continue their pursuit of the 1st team relatively uninterrupted.

Hi bc. I agree ! JET is something different. I like Simpson a lot, but watching JET yesterday I can see why AW rate JET higher. He can create something inside the box, packed with 15 players. He can get pass 2-3 players, and can use both feets, and he is strong. Theo can not, Simpson can not, even AA23 have not passed “anyone” this week. Chak29 can not (yet) Nasri can, Wilshere can, and Vela can. Yesterday JET and Jack played together, and they have technic.. If AW use 4-3-3 we a RB/LB to run down and make good passes in front of goal. Now we do not have a good “assist” from the flanks, and we need 3-4 players in the box when “the asssit” is coming in.. AA23 must stay in the center and not wide. He dont have the speed to pass Eboue.. He tries 5 times yesterday. Eboue impress me a lot this week. He is much better than Clichy/Sagna, bot they have been in the WC and looked rusty..

Nasri have been impossible to stop this week, and have made some execelent shots and freekics. We dont need Ozil…..(yet)

      SuperMac,

Thanks again for the report! It’s great hearing about the boys during training…much appreciated!

Is Diaby there. You haven’t mentioned him so I guess he has not returned to the team yet, but if Clichy and Sagna are back shouldn’t Diaby be there too?

Glad to hear that Eboue is looking good in training. He is criminally under-rated by many Arsenal fans, and I wouldn’t be surprised if, in the coming season, he sees even more time on the pitch than last season.

I think JET will be a certain starter in the cups, and we could see where he will progress, cause no matter how great he looks in pre-season, we’ve got to be rational, he isn’t going to be anywhere near the starting 11. A spot on the bench is likely, with his versatility, but really depends on our injuries.

I disagree. Walcott is in the starting 11. And if JET keeps impress more than Walcott do then he will be ahead of Walcott and also be close to the starting 11. I have no doubt that JET and Wilshere will impress more than walcott throughout the preseason. Imagine JET and Wilshere gets a few games of run. They will be light years ahead of walcott.

Walcott is an impact player yes. But wilshere and JET can turn a game around themselves. Think of how good Hleb was for us. Wilshere got more than Hleb at this age already, speaking of vision.

This season will be good for us as long as we don’t get too many injuries.

I agree ytgunner. JET is only 19 and will not be a reg starter this season, but he could be a great sub with his style and he so strong in the box. Last season AW often let Dudu/Vela get 20 min from the bench and they could to noting in the box. Dudu is a great finisher, but he is not strong in the “boxfights” against Terry and the another Pitbulls… JET is not easy to handle, and even Verm5 have prob with him.

Jom do you have a selected memory? Hleb was one of the most derided players to have played for Arsenal in recent years. The amount of assists and goals the guy actually got were pretty average for a guy who was supposed to be that talented. I remember people moaning over how bad he was, i didnt think he was as bad as people said but hes not as good as you are making out. Its like with Flamini he was great in the season we almost won the league but he wasn’t this godlike figure that people always make him out to be. Fine JET had a good game against Graz and i really hope to see him and Lansbury play a fair few games this year, but to say that he should be ahead of Walcott is frankly stupid. Graz aren’t exactly a world beating team whereas although Theo isnt very consistent at the moment he has played against some of the world’s best teams with games like Milan and Liverpool springing to mind Walcott is still streets ahead of JET at the moment.

I remember us scoring many goals that season Hleb was here. And our midfield was one of the best in the world. Instead of watching goals and assist for one particular player. Watch a whole team play and he was part of that team and he was in the starting 11. Without him in the team we didn’t play as good. So I don’t care about the assist and goals. I care about how good he was in the field.

As I said. JET needs to keep impressing and he will be ahead of walcott. You can’t live on old merits all your life. I have no doubt that he will impress in the league too. Theo has been playing against big teams but that doesn’t mean he has been impressive against them. Even if he has, he has also been completely shit against Fullham, bolton and so on.

I expect absolutely top class performance to start a game for Arsenal and so far Walcott is doing the same shit over and over. He runs the same patch over and over in the same match. He keeps failure over and over. JET, wilshere and Lansbury is not doing the same thing, they try to adopt and do different things if they fail once. They keeps make the marker guessing.

We will see in the beginning of the season what Wenger will do. I am sure he wants every player to perform if he is to take a starting spot.

I don’t understand these “Walcott shouldn’t be a starter” comments. He hasn’t been a regular starter, when Nasri and Theo have both been fit this season Nasri has been picked almost every time. Rosicky was also played ahead of Theo on occasion.

Also, Walcott and JET are such completely different players that comparisons between them seem a little bizarre. And If JET is to get first-team games, Arshavin, Nasri, Rosicky, Walcott, Eboue, Wilshere and Vela are all going to stand in his way, not just Theo.

any news about the #1 goalkeeper who will be?
    thanks for answering.
