Arsenal Make Contract Offer To Miyaichi

Arsenal have offered a contract to Japanese winger Ryo Miyaichi, despite the youngster nursing a broken leg. According to sources in Japan, Miyaichi will sign for the Gunners after his contract with Chukyo High School expires at the end of September.

Miyaichi completed a trial spell with Arsenal last month and Arsene Wenger told the youngster his staff would keep tabs on his progress. Ryo then joined Ajax on trial but suffered a broken leg during a behind closed doors game. Ajax released the prospect and Arsenal ended their interest but medical staff ar Chukyo High School have confirmed the injury isn’t as bad as first feared, and now Wenger is ready to do a deal.

Reports in Japan say Ryo will sign a five year professional contract with Arsenal on his 18th birthday in December.

From your match report, he had a very good trial game. From the highlights on youtube, he seems like an interesting prospect. I hope he makes a full recovery and does well for us.

Thanks for being on top of things Jay!

Thanks again for the info! I am really happy about us signing him, it must be a real boost to the lads spirits as well during a difficult recovery period. Our coaches must think highly of him. One question if you are able to tell me, will we have to farm him out to Spain or somewhere like with most of the young players we have got from other continents?

We can only farm out certain South American prospects to Spain so that they can get their Spanish passport. Miyaichi might have to come in under an ‘exceptional talent’ visa like they tried with Song.

We send South American players to Spain to get passports, and african players to Belgium, because they were colonies of those countries and can get citizenship (and an EU passport) easily. There is no such country in Europe to send a Japanese player, so there would be no benefit in sending him out on loan.

Good news for the lad recovering from a nasty injury.

I saw this guy play the first half vs AFC Wimbledon earlier this month and although he didn’t get an awful lot of change out of MOTM Blackwood, he looked very fast, direct and skillful.

He’s quite small though and looks very young – let’s hope he grows a bit. Wouldn’t say he was anywhere near breaking into the first team at the moment (for those that asked).

Met him afterwards with his parents and the three of them were absolutely charming – he’s clearly from quite a well to do Japanese family.

@ veske – thanks for that, that makes sense with regard to my football manager league with Zaragoza, I always wondered why Altidore took years to get citizenship but Zezinho took 2 seasons! I hope we get an exceptional talent permit, but we seem to have been unlucky with that in recent years.

AW tok a chance on a youngster coming off an injury once before…the Portuguese kid who lieft earlier this summer or last, can’t remember. That didn’t work out but this is similar. He goes for a talented kid when other clubs may have been turned off him due to a bad injury.

Hope the signing works out for us and Miyaichi turns out to be a pure winger in the first team. We need more of those. I think Silva has a good chance to make it as a winger, and possibly Deacon and Watt, but we aren’t overloaded in that area like we are in central midfield.

I remember him also taking a chance on a few other players coming from injuries too Kanu, Henry & Vieira lets hope he follows in their footseps and not Bischoff’s or Garde’s

    • August 31, 2010 at 8:12 pm
      Permalink

It’s not the same. Bischoff had been more or less injured for the last four years. Miyaichi, however, fractured his fibula (the bone behind the tibia which is the shin bone). I am no specialist on this but I imagine this being nowhere as bad as Ramsey’s injury since he broke both his tibia and fibula.

well, it’s excellent news [for the board/ shareholders]…

myaichi got a broken leg,… surely
    *a bargin basement buy…price wise
    *ajax would compete with us…hurrah
*he’s ‘passed the medical’ with a broken limb… can train with ramsey, rvp, djourou, …and probably more to come by Sep/Dec when he signs

while i am happy we sign a japanese talent, it’s because we could now enter the japan market …selling his shirts!! and may be honda’s too if you believe the media

at least a ‘best performing (business category)’ trophy to look forward to next FY…haha

A little off topic, i notice that Arsenal.com have yet to update the reserves and u18’s with the new scholars, etc like they normally do, yet the photo clearly includes them all. Then it got me thinking as to what those players who do not appear in either the 1st team team photo nor the u18’s are thinking right now. The likes of Randall, Hoyte, Murphy, Cruise, Shea, Sunu, Henderson, Deacon, Evina, considering they have seen other players who were not in either picture leave on loan already Botelho, Barazite, Watt, Freeman, Coquelin, Galindo, Bartley, perhaps they too are all getting their TOM-Tom’s ready to see where they might be going?

Probably it’s just because they are training at Arsenal’s ground. Carson and Foster pulled out due to injury. So Don Capello probably asked Wenger if he had an English goalkeeper around, and voilà James Shea gets a cap.

This is fantastic news. I knew Wenger wouldn’t lose interest in a player simply because of an injury; he’s a real believer and developer so I was sure Arsenal would not let young Miyaichi down. He is possibly the best midfield prospect to come out of Japan in recent years and is a real gem of a player; he would be a perfect fit for Arsenal’s style of play. Thanks for reporting this, J!

Finally a winger who can run at players and create chances.

But we need more we cant rely on central midfielders playing as wingers or strikers playing as wingers we need creavtive, fast, clever wingers who dribble past players and break defences lines.

Passing through defences is difficult you need special players who can run with the ball to break those kind of defences.

Thats why i cant believe when we lost alexander hleb we replaced him with nasri hes not nowhwere as good as hleb in terms of driibbling and going past players.

Hleb was one of the best 2 footed wingers and i cant believe hes gone to Birmingham he could be a world beater

Theo walcott looks like hes learning how to play as a right winger at arsenal hes looking very unpredicatble and his pace can unsettle defences strageties more so than someone like nasri who just passes the ball sideways and backwards and slows donw our attack

Japanese footy fan here. I have a few thoughts and questions from a Japanese perspective.

    1) By Japanese standards, Miyaichi is a premium, cream-of-the-crop prospect for his age group. I saw him play at the u17 World Cup, where he substituted in the second half against Mexico and was very impressive, playing as a traditional winger hitting the byline and knocking in crosses.

    2) Wenger is quoted in the Japanese media as telling Miyaichi at the end of his trial: “This is your home [Arsenal]. Come back soon. Learn some English.” While Miyaichi had a hard time choosing between Arsenal and Ajax, he says he chose Arsenal because he felt Arsenal valued him more.

    3) While physical strength will clearly be a huge issue for Miyayoshi in England, one good thing is that he has decent size — he’s listed at 180 cm and noted as having a large frame (by Japanese standards).

Not being familiar with English football, I have a few questions:

    1) Obviously, Miyaichi doesn’t have the caps to get a work permit. Is this likely to be a problem?

    2) How often do Arsenal’s foreign youth signings end up being players of international caliber, even if not at Arsenal?
