Seaman Left Frustrated Over ‘Keeper Development

Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman believes Arsène Wenger has all the options he needs to solve the club’s long running search for a number one, but the candidates are failing to show the best of themselves.

In an interview with commercial radio station talkSPORT, Seaman spoke of his frustration at the mistakes both Manuel Almunia and Łukasz Fabiański have made, but questioned whether Reserve duo Vito Mannone and Wojciech Szczęsny were showing their best in training.

Seaman coaches part-time at London Colney, acting as assistant to Gerry Peyton where required. However, the majority of his work is done alongside Tony Roberts, looking after the younger and emerging options.

Speaking specifically on the younger duo, the 47-year-old spoke about both Mannone and Szczęsny. The pair have failed to win the confidence of Wenger as yet.

“At the moment they’re not fulfilling their potential. I’ve seen what they can do, Almunia and Fabianski, but Wojciech and Vito even. At the moment they’re not showing how good they are.”

Szczęsny and Mannone have both openly admitted their disappointment at the lack of playing opportunities in recent weeks, but Seaman’s comments shed light on their commitment to the cause, and whether they’re doing all they can to put themselves firmly in Wenger’s plans.

oh snap. Over to you Don Vito and Woj. So what’s now? Our gks are not good enough? We need reinforcement in gk-coaching? This feels like different takes on the same scene…

Gerry Peyton was a crap gk for Fulham. How he got the job at AFC is beyond me. The standard of keeping has gone down since Sir Bob Wilson retired. Has anyone seen how poor the GK warm up is before a game, its pathetic. Sack Peyton and get someone in who knows goalkeeping and playing at the top level.

? He is now a coach, it doesn’t matter how good a keeper he was. Most people do realise that the best players rarely make the best coaches and many of the elite managers and coaches had very ordinary playing careers such as Wenger, Mourinho, Fergie etc.
So Peyton’s playing career is completely immaterial to how good a coach he is.

I disagree on the keeper stand point. It is completely different to field players. I played both at a good level and as a keeper you can only learn from good keepers.

I think it has a lot to do with player’s mentality some players just dont have big team mentality and dont fit in at a big club. That might be the case with Fabianski

I think its also got something to do with our goalkeeping coach. Arsenal have for years been after the former Warsaw goalkeeping coach and have come empty handed.

? on wat basis? If he wants to play then he needs to prove to the coaches that he is fit to be our number 1. The boy is talented but untested, he needs another run out in either the EPL (tho i DOUBT that will ever happen) or a championship club. If he loves arsenal he will fit and break into the squad as did Cesc, Song, Wilshere, Walcott who were bred at the club and worked hard= them playing for the team they LOVE!!!!

he seem so unhappy though and i dont blame him! having see all our keepers play he was and still the bes performer by far, but for some reason hes not even play a game yet this season_- abit like merida situation but wrst cos he himself came out and show his dissappointment. well the next carling cup game must b his chance now if wenger still hope he will sign. but if u r not so optimistic u would know that he already have one leg out of the emirate.

Possibly, but you could see szczesny’s outbursts as a sign that he really wants to play for arsenal. Merida on the other hand kept relatively quiet and moved on to spain when the offer came in. I think he really wanted to leave for reasons beyond just the lack of opportunities, although he should have played more imo.
It was also a bit unfortunate becuase he scored that goal in the league and it was at a time when we had a lot of injuries and wenger might have been ready to give him a proper chance in a league match, but he immediately got injured and so never got that chance.
I agree that Szczesny should be given more chances. I think wenger is a bit afraid to hurt the feelings of the others by picking the youngest one, even though he could be the best.

Arsene Wengers visionary and his usual gambling is fading. Also Wenger gives respect to who join the club first, i mean base on seniority. But since he aware that Almunia and Fabianski are all known to be committing mistakes which he should have Vito. Vitos is prescence in goal post last season, kept some cleanshit especially against away to Fulham. Please Wen give this young vibrant Vito another chance of which will prove himself.

you seem to froget that vito made one big mistake in every game he played last season (except against fulham) and every time he made that mistake the opposition scored a goal.

It seems like we have one too many goalkeepers in contention. The reason for that is they’ve all got significant flaws in either their game or level of experience, so Arsene is hedging his bets.

Perhaps Arsenal should be looking at GK as a position where we simply buy the best, finished article that we can, rather than try to develop. If a great keeper comes through the ranks, then all well and good, but it is the one position where it really does pay to have the best you possibly experienced player you can.

Let other teams suffer the undoubted catastrophes of young goalkeepers gaining experience. Our young keepers should be farmed out on loan and a top class keeper bought. If Almunia doesn’t like playing second fiddle, then put him up for sale.

      My feelings exactly. Bravo.
There can be no compromise for the goalkeeping position, and let’s admit that neither Almunia nor Fabianski are reliable keepers (to say the least). But Arsene keeps telling us how awesome Fabianski is in training …

David Seamen says that Fabianski and Almunia are world class in training. Who cares? Everytime they go out for a game them become ordinary. i’m sure there are lots of players who look brilliant in training but are uselss when it comes to a real match

well “Jdilla” the reason why fabregas and walcott is bcos they get games to play. we give them a chance to play in a top league for a top club. we gave them future thats y they love the club. i dont think fabregas or walcott love the club when they first game. but what the club gave them makes them do. but for our poor szczesny never get a chance, and i mean A CHANCE while he play so well everytime he play. so u cant say that he dont love the club but the way the club treat him is different from others really

you will see szczesny play this month, I guarantee it and its not just szczesny its Mannone, Fabianski and Almunia who all want to play
If szczesny had signed a new contract he would be on loan by now but hopefully he will sign a contract and then go on loan

if he doesn’t sign then you will see wenger going into the market and buying our future no.1
