Wellington Backs Out Of Brazil Duty

Wellington Silva has backed out of plans to play for Brazil’s Under 18’s at next weeks International Mediterranean Cup, after a row with loan club Levante.

Silva was called up by Brazil coach Ney Franco last month, with Levante initially giving the player the green light to feature. However, they have since refused to release the 18-year-old for training ahead of the start of the competition, leading to the frustrated Wellington deciding to drop out.

The training stint was seen as a chance for the players to impress Franco, with starting berths up for grabs. Yet Silva felt he was destined for a place on the bench, as he wouldn’t have the opportunity to earn a place for himself.

Franco has since moved to offer the winger assurances that he will be involved in future squads, including a possible appearance at the Under 20 World Cup in Columbia in July.

You can follow updates on all of Arsenal’s Brazilian players over at Brazil Gunners.

This kid seems alot of trouble. I hope he can get his head down and start playing.
It’s notable the difference between him and the Japanese youngster on loan at Feyenoord where they cant speak highly enough of him.
Less time on twitter, more time at training thats my advice.

Some people will slam me for being “racist”, but nationalities really do make a difference. There’s been no end of troublesome/lazy Brazilian talents who haven’t made it. The Japanese on the other hand tend to get their heads down and get on with their work. Hats off!

He is in a much much tougher league than Ryo. Don’t forget that. While Ryo was playing in a school Wellington was in the highest division in Brazil. There is no comparison. But the Levante coach is doing it wrong. He doesn’t give a min to this guy.

I agree, this is not all Silva’s fault. He’s a young boy still growing up and Levante don’t seem to have been very welcoming or patient. They should be using the carrot instead of the stick. Give him 5-10 minutes here and there, encourage him. Instead they’ve marginalised him, and now haven’t allowed him to join up with Brazil U18s for no apparent reason.

I haven’t heard Levante say one good word about him, just negativity and criticism. How do they think that’s going to improve the situation? Silva needs to go somewhere else.

Yeah Cygan, but no japanese player has ever been as good as rivaldo, ronaldinho, ronaldo, romario etc etc, so you can’t possibly be saying we should sign japanese players instead of brazilians!?
I’m sick of all this. I don’t think you’re a racist, but honestly, can’t you just judge players on their individual merits? Some players are more talented than others, some are more hard-working than others – why do you feel the need to link it with their nationality?

David Bentley and Jermaine Pennant come to mind when I pause to think about shit-head wingers who have washed out rather than make a significant contribution to our club, and they are English. So no, I don’t think nationality has anything to do with it. When I think of Brazilian players, I think of some of the greatest footballers in the history of the world.

Has got nothing to do with nationalities, but more so with cultures and backgrounds of individuals. Wellington comes from a poor background, so adjusting to life with money, expectations and perhaps fame is a lot more difficult than someone like Ryo. Japan is a very well developed country so the change from Japan to the Netherlands is a significant smaller one than from Brazil to Spain.

Just give him time before judging the player.

Any news as to why they refused to let him go? Was it because of the row or was the row caused by them refusing?

It seems odd. They don’t want to play him but they don’t want him to go away and get some game time and hopefully find some form.

He 100% needs to find a new loan club in the summer. Delete his twitter account and concentrate on his football. There is no doubt the kid has the talent, but he needs to fix up asap, if he wants a future at Arsenal

This loan spell seems to have gone pear-shaped. Time to pull him out and place him with a different club. He’s getting no game time, and is now being prevented from playing at international level.

Do Levante even realise that we own the player, not them? If they don’t help develop the player, we’ll loan him out to a club that will.

Levante have not stopped him going to the tournament. Only stopped him joining early training.

@cygan..you’re not racist mate but don’t generalize, Brazil just has a greater conveyor belt of talent, but the expectations as well as the hype factor are also great. There is no bar to talent/potential actually realising itself into full class. How many “starlets” have we had that have amounted to nothing, English or otherwise. This kid seems to have more drama than anything else, but either he’ s an idiot or he’s being advised wrong. Where he gets the nuts to pull out of a Brazil national side when he cant even make the bench at Levante is astounding. Wengers influence here is shown to be nil, this is the downside of farming out players to other countr

    It’s all well and good, but let’s make some things clear;
    1. Fluminesse complained about his poor attitude.
    2. Levante have complained about his poor attitude.
    3. He’s dropped out himself because he has NO GUARANTEE of a starting place. WTF? One should earn the right for a place through training. Feeling that “I just won’t get the place” doesn’t scream “strong personality” to me imo.

Agree on 1. and 2. but it says he feels he won’t get a starting place BECAUSE he can’t earn one by proving himself in training. Seems bizarre by levante if he’s not playing for them to not let him train with Brazil.

fluminense only dropped him after arsenal refused to allow him to stay in brazil for one more year, if he was so bad why were they keen to keep him.
then comes crappy lavante with stupid excuses. hello! nasri, cesc and wilshere our best players and they all have twitter accounts. they are blaming him for everything he hasnt even kicked the ball for them.

I think the critisism of Wellington is a bit unfair.
One hes a kid still and the same kid that scored 4 goals for us in one game in a trial.
Two Fluminesee never had an issue with his attitude until after he signed for Arsenal then they stopped playing him NOW any kid a team suddenly stops playing will have an attitude when it wasnt about his ability but about the fact he signed for us.
Three half our loanees away from home in spain have had issues with spanish clubs.

Give the lad a break im sure he will come good eventualy hes also with a top tier side not playing in segunda.

Agreed, though he’d already signed for Arsenal and Fluminense still played him.

He was dropped because there was a major overhaul of the Fluminense team with a lot of good players being brought which lead to the team being Brasileirão champions.

From the little I’ve seen of him playing for Flu, I was impressed enough to give the guy a chance. It’s a big, BIG, change in culture and lifestyle that these kids go through, so give them time. He is somewhere where he has no friends and little family, moreover, both his and Arsenals plans seem to have been different from what actually went down. The kid was taking english lessons prior to him coming to England, he was preparing for his life in London, ESPN Brasil even did a piece on him and his preparations.

Anywho, pull him out of Levante and give this guy an actual chance. Maybe, like Pedro, he can put in a good shift.

I think he is just frustrated at his situation. Don’t forgot, Pedro had a bit of a wild time when he first went abroad but has tamed that now.

Levante really had no real justification not to release him to train when they had no intention of using him. Many felt the change of scenery, trip to brazil and an oppurtunity to be given a chance could have been just what this lad needed

Phv you are right he need time but i am fed up about levante not given him playing time at least you judge a player when you give him the chance to play and he did not to perform well, you cannot say wellington is not a good player because you did not give him a chance to play and he fail to perform so i am sorry to say that we make a mistake by sending him on loan to levante so sending him to another club will do him a lot of good.

Has Arsenal taken the time to properly organize this placement? How many game times, positioning, expectations, etc, etc. Have we simply dumped the youngster and hope that it will be OK! Arsenal must consider their investment. If Lavante is not working out, questions must be asked Why? Someone, from Arsenal should be out there immediately and spend sometime watching him in training, his interactions with the club and team mates. His living arrangements? I would personally want to know why a promising and talent have not played one game as yet?

Which one of us would invest large sums of money and will stand idle and let it rut??

Their is so many areas in this club that needs fixing.

The fault is not Wellington, but Arsenal! Immediate action must be taken immediately. Lavante not working out – MOVE HIM NOW!

I find it curious people are blaming Levante for not fielding the kid after they went out of their way to get him in the first place. But what I cant understand is the fact that this kid who has barely kicked a ball in anger in Spain feels he’s worth a place in the starting side, so what happens if he comes to Arsenal and Wenger does a Vela on him, will he kick off then?

It sounds like none of you have ever been frustrated in your life and are all just a bunch of Angels. Look, I can’t imagine what this kid is going through. He essentially signs for another club at 16 then has to stay at a club for 2 years that does not really want him and definitely has no vested interest in his development anymore. Then he chooses to show his ambition and pick a first division team to be on loan to and he gets a minute of game time on a crap team. Then you have this situation where they won’t let him go to his national team even though they are barely using him. Yes, I am sure he has some attitude issues but lets not forget who is the kid in this situation and who are the adults. The adults around him need to start acting like adults.

Send him to Holland and Feyonord next season, then we can judge him.

It is very obvious that the spanish clubs do not really care for players on loan, as they cant be bothered to develop the player for future, they know he probably wont be there in a season or two.

Arsenal negoitated a fantastic deal with Bolton for Wilshere when he was there on loan, but I am not seeing or reading about the same for other loanees. I also feel from observation some young talent is moving backwards rather than progressing.

    What is often the obstacle!

Teams might take a young player on loan, but their first priority is to there own players and the youngster could stay permanently fixed on the bench. It is a necessary growing up stage for a young player, but it requires more involvement by parent clubs.

It is easy for a report to be put out that a player is lazy and a fool would readily buy into that! When a team has a favourite they put that individual in cotton gloves. The others simply have to take what they are given. There is an old saying, when your face fits. However, young players needs to do their homework together with their parents before accepting an offer. Who is the link worker between club and young talent? How much time is invested? What is their a Care Programme / Work Programme / Development Programme between club and club. How often is that reviewed?

We are dealing here with people’s lives and their future. It will be interest to hear the real stories!

I think most people here are grateful and impressed with the effort this site puts in. Maybe you could wait a couple of days, then read the British press who recycle Jamies story and can make up a few blanks along the way.

The trouble is that, on paper, it makes perfect sense to send South Americans to that part of Europe in terms of history. However, it seems that they just don’t work out how they should.
It’s a huge cultural change to move a player from Brazil to Europe and I think that’s why they go somewhere that’s perhaps more similar. Maybe we could loan him to a Portuguese side if that truly is a factor in where he goes. He’d be much more likely to get playing time there.

Feel sorry for the guy. Attitude problems can be dealt with. Remember how Wenger transformed certain player’s lives when he joined? But this situation seems unworkable.

Geez there are some real drama queens on this board. 1) we don’t have any real info about his situation, 2) which kid who had his hopes raised, then dashed would not have some issues – remember he was due to receive the specia talent visa until for inexplicable reasons this was withdrawn.

Some of the stuff i’ve heard people say about wellington purely based on second hand info is frankly unbelievable. How about we wait till he is at arsenal before we totally trash him? Come on get a grip.

As for the twitter thing, from what I gather kids his age use this as I use my email and mobile, if someone had told me when I was 18 I couldn’t use my phone, i’d have told them where to get off.

Two words I keep hearing Arsenal fans using when a young player is going backwards. 1) Lazy, 2) Attitude – problem.

Let me give you something to chew on from experience of working with hundreds of young people in different settings: a) Poor managerment skills (b)poor coaching skills (c)lack of clearly defined goals (d)favouritism (e)limited expectations (f) poor examples. I wonder how many lads with a similiar ability as Rooney, Ashley Cole, Ian Wright were dismissed – with the label (POOR ATTITUDE). The easiest action for a coach is to dismiss a player because they prove a little challenging. Than to find another method to find out what is the root cause.

In anyone’s standards, ‘the assassin’ Ryo contributions in the short period he has been on loan should earn him that ‘special talent award’. A special report together with video evidences and feedback from the current club should be prepared and presented to back-up Arsenal’s second request.
