Boreham Wood 1-7 Arsenal: Watt Bags A Trio

Arsenal continued their build up to the new Premier Reserve League season with a 7-1 win over Boreham Wood this evening. A goal on his Reserve team debut for Serge Gnabry was added to by a hat-trick from Sanchez Watt, while Luke Freeman, Henri Lansbury and Kyle Ebecilio all got one each.

Neil Banfield had to make do without a handful of youngsters currently on first-team duty, but he was able to call upon the services of Henri Lansbury, as he bids to improve his fitness. Reice Charles-Cook continued in goal after a Man of the Match performance against Stevenage FC.

There were places on the bench for some of last seasons Under 18’s, while summer signing Serge Gnabry was also included after scoring against a Sunderland’s XI in midweek. Goalkeeper coach Tony Roberts made up the numbers.

ARSENAL: Charles-Cook; Yennaris, Hajrovic, Boateng, Meade; Lansbury, Galindo, Özyakup; Watt, Aneke, Freeman.

Subs: Roberts (GK), Angha, Monteiro, Brislen-Hall, Ebecilio, Gnabry.

Arsenal settled to the task quickly, and carved out the first chance of the game when Sanchez Watt lashed an effort straight at the ‘keeper. It was an early signal that the Gunners were in the mood.

That said, it was Boreham Wood who took a surprise lead, when Mario Noto’s lashed free-kick went straight through Charles-Cook’s hands and into the goal. 1-0.

Banfield’s boys went straight for the jugular after the restart, and had two quick fire chances. Luke Freeman missed the first, before the aforementioned Watt finished a nice move for 1-1. Watt then had an effort blocked minutes later, but Freeman was on hand to turn home the rebound. 2-1.

Henri Lansbury had a long range free-kick saved as half time approached, but it didn’t matter, as the England Under 21 international crashed home a shot from a similar range shortly after. It was a stunning third. 3-1.

Half time came and went, and with Gunners in total control, Banfield rotated. Serge Gnabry came on for his Reserve team debut, and he made it four from a set piece. Fellow substitute Kyle Ebecilio then got in on the act, grabbing number five.

Arsenal kept pushing forward, and although were vulnerable on the break, it wasn’t long before goal number six arrived. The impressive Watt, who had been a thorn in the hosts side all evening, bagging a brace. 6-1, but he wasn’t finished there. Another slick team move ended up with Watt through, and he made no mistake in completing his hat-trick. 7-1.

With the possibility of 10 goals in sight, the visitors continued their push, but the game finished 7-1. All in all, an excellent run out in front of the watching Pat Rice, Boro Primorac and Steve Rowley.

You obviously missed the manager saying Lansbury was in his plans and will be staying this season then.

He is getting his fitness up and he may even be OK for Sundays game.

Yeh I don’t know if it was you reneey who posted the full quotes earlier but they are a world apart from the snippets they are showing on the arsenal twitter feed for example. If Lansbury can play 70 mins tonight he could play 70 mins over the 2 days this weekend. Frimpong was probably at a similar fitness level at the start of preseason and he’s played a part in every game
Henri actually seems like a relatively bright lad despite his reputation as a bit of a tearaway when he was younger, his contract is up at the end of the season and he’ll want assurances that he’ll get a game here. I don’t think Wenger is going to give him that.
I think he will probably end up at Norwich before September. He could sign an extension and go there on loan, but I doubt that will happen

Looks like Bartley will get a chance this weekend, however the numbers just don’t add up if we buy Jagielka especially. Wenger is never gonna sell Squillaci this summer. Personally I’d like us to get Cahill with Bartley going the other way for a season long loan, 20 games in the prem and he’d definitely be ready for us.
I would love to see Bartley, Frimpong, Lansbury and in a season or 2 Aneke and Afobe make it at the club as their passion and willingness to fight for the club is something that has been lacking recently. Whilst Wilshere is undoubtedly a footballing genius, what pleases me most about him is his fighting spirit, its nice to have a player who will kick Jermaine Pennant just for the sake of it
Don’t mean to sound nationalistic as players like Szczesny, Vermaelen and RVP demonstrate this spirit as well

I think that people can accept broken English when it is not your native language, but I have a problem when people deliberately write in slang. That makes it more difficult for slang non-aficionado and foreigners. Also IMHO that make them appear ignorant and stupid rather cool and hip.

Bartley will go on loan as Arsene Wenger will want to keep 5 centre halves for the season. If he goes, Arsene will insist for a premiership club. I cannot see the interest for him to play for Rangers. The level of the SPL is lower than championship and we already know that Kyle is at least championship quality. The problem is that there is few premiership clubs willing to use an inexperienced rookie centre half.
Also he mentioned that Vermeulen may deputise at left-back when necessary.
Squillacci is likely to play in the Carling Cup and some FA Cup. The preferred centre half pairs being Koscielny-Vermeulen with Djourou-Squillaci the cover pairing.

sorry internet coaches. bartley is our new signing unless he really make a mess of it in pre-season but it looks like he’s not in the mood to put a foot wrong.surely the boards will agree that gambling on our own youth is better than spending on england B defender from a mid-table team with no champions league experience.
even if we’re trying to buy any of them overrated dudes its just gonna an addition on undisclosed fee.
personally i will trust wenger if he gives bartley a chance.

Is it me, or does Johan Djourou look ordinary whenever playing with Squiliffi but pretty steady when with either of the other two? I think it must be a lack of communication between him and Squiliffi. Give Kyle Bartley a go I reckon, him and Lansbury deserve the chance.

Bartley has to replace Squilacci. I am sry but he is awful. No way Jenkinson and Traore should be in the first team squad. I know Jenskinson is one for the future but he is not ready. Seriously, I thought this year we were not going to let weak spots hold us back.

The last thing is, we have to learn the difference between attacking beautiful football and dumb football. Full backs just bombing forward no matter what. All of our center midfielders getting caught on the wrong side of the ball. Going up in games but still playing all out attack. These things are really what lead us to failures. We have most of the players needed to win but some times we just play stupid.

    We learned Saturday that

+ Jenkinson is a good prospect but he is not yet ready. He is so eager to go forward that he leaves too often his position. When Traore is bombing forward he should not join.

+ Traore had a good game and showed sign that he is getting better on 1 v 1 situation.

+ Squillaci was awful. Bartley is unlikely to be as bad as he was. A new commanding centre half is a must. I am not just talking about the physical attribute. Barley may be that man. With Sakho unlikely to leave new money bag PSG, maybe it is time to give a chance to Kyle Bartley.

+ Frimpong’s big energy game means that at the first team level he does not more than 70 minutes in the tank. After 70 minutes he was ready to pass out.

+ For all his brilliance going forward, Ramsey has still no positioning sense. In the second half, his tactical naivety kept putting our defense at risk. We played a pressing game with Fimpong and Wilshere, but Ramsey never pressed. In a 4-2-3-1, the line of two have to work in tandem to screen the defense and mop up any second balls he never did. He was so bad that when Arshavin was replaced, Eboue was asked to replace Ramsey in the centre of the pitch and Ramsey was exiled on the wing. To be displaced by full back that we trying to sale should tell him that Wenger may be regretting his purchase.

+ Benik Afobe should be given a chance instead of Chamack. Clearly Chamack’s confidence has been shot to pieces. He never try to score, just to pass to other teammates. With all the pretty pattern we create, we may need a more blunt instrument to finish our moves. Benik Afobe is more likely to try to burst the back of the net than trying an irrelevent flick to a partner.

It would’ve made sense to take a smaller squad of 16-18 for Benfica to give the starting 11 for Newcastle the full 90 mins.

Then had players 17-30 in the pecking order (so the majority that will top up the first team squad) staying at home to play decent opposition and also getting 90mins. Pity the league starts as Championship opposition would’ve been useful.
