Ipswich Agree Emmanuel-Thomas Deal

Ipswich Town expect to complete the signing of Jay Emmanuel-Thomas in the next 24 hours, subject to a medical.

Arsenal accepted two bids of £1.1 million from Ipswich and their Championship rivals Burnley over the weekend, after Arsène Wenger told the 20-year-old he does not feature in his first-team plans. Emmanuel-Thomas turned down the opportunity to talk to Burnley, and was in Suffolk today for talks.

Ipswich had hoped to complete the transfer this evening, but despite the delays, they still hope Jay will be registered in time for their pre-season friendly with Colchester United tomorrow night.

Jay, who is Arsenal’s longest serving player, showed glimpses of his potential during loan spells with Blackpool and Doncaster Rovers, but a difficult season at Cardiff City left many wandering if he’d ever replicate his emphatic form shown in the Under 18 and Reserve teams.

Arsenal may have been frustrated with his attitude and application at times, but their acknowledgement of his ability is noted with the fact a sell on fee has been included in the deal.

Sensible business. JET obviously has the mad skills, but he’s miles from first team level. I expect him to have a career at a fairly high level and make us some money with that sell on clause. A latter dat Jay Bothroyd. No regrets…

A shame that the attitude could not keep up with the talent. He does have the ability and talent to be a great striker, but it really requires a completely different approach.

I think Wenger is selling Nicklas Bendtner so that Afobe has a Chance and he is also selling Eboue so Gervinho gets the No. 27. Lansbury and JET are being sold because Henderson and Miyaichi have come in. Not sure if Lansbury is leaving yet. I like Lansbury as a player, he is a local lad. Arsenal has always been his team.

Ian Wright had attitude !!! Lot’s of attitude. Sometimes very bad attitude. Tony Adams was an alcoholic. Paul Merson had a gambling problem. How would they have faired in the Arsenal Youth set up now? Sold on before they could prove themselves like JET?
I have always backed Wenger’s decisions but I really believe he is making a big mistake with this one. I think if JET had been given a chance last year when we had all our strikers, bar Chamahk, out injured, he would have turned heads. Even played him on the right wing when Walcott was out. The kid just needed a chance.
Damn shame to see him go and I for one hope he proves Wenger and Arsenal wrong.
Good luck JET !!! Thanks for being an Arsenal player and I’m sorry Arsenal don’t appreciate what you had to offer.

It would’ve been nice to give him 1 more loan spell and see if he’d come good, but this may be best for all parties in the end. talent alone doesn’t cut it, you need the combination of both Talent AND hard work!

if Lansbury is sold it’s a joke, we have three prospects left from the Academy, Frimpong, Aneke and Afobe, and Afobe hasn’t a chance in hell of carving a place for himself at Arsenal with the competition.

Would far rather the failed squad players were sold to make real room, JET, Aneke and Lansbury promoted if we aren’t going to be buying players. JET is a complex player and needs a manager with good vision.

Much rather the Academy team get a chance rather than the likes of Vela, Diaby, Denilson.

What I do find sadder, is the fact that again, we have actually spent £0, nothing zilch nada!

Seriously all i wanted was to see JET start one Carling Cup game versus a prem team to really see how good or bad he was after 60 minutes at least. Then i would say it just to sell the most lethal reserves player we have. This Kinda reminds me of Barazite after being the most prolific striker one season and still not given a start ahead of other less prolific players that time, only to come off the bench make an impact then dislocate his shoulder. oh well

when he goes to psg he will raid us for miyaichi, wellington, and plenty of others.

Wenger does what he thinks is best for the club and not what is best for himself, so he can look good in a short periode of time because he is being pressured.

Thats is the reason you know you can trust him, and he have always done like that.

You might not agree with his decisions, but he have always done what is best for the club and not for himself.

There wouldnt be anything easier in the world than to just go out and spend a lot of money to make himself look good, and then let someone else deal with the consequences some years from now when the club is ruined.

It goes to show how loyal he is to his obligations as a manager.

Diaby has been great over the past couple of years and always puts his foot in and works hard.
The last time traore was in the team he did very well and the last thing you can accuse him of is not working hard enough.

There was a newspaper article about jet driving a car he got with his signin on bonus wen he didnt have a drivers lisence and police had to smash his windows in to get him out. Doesnt sound like the right attitude to me. http://m.mirror.co.uk/article?a=m4:22012339 cardiff he was either very good or very bad. Plus, i struggle to see where he would fit in in the arsenal system. End of the day arsenal know better than anyone how their young stars are progressin and they must feel this is good business for both player and club.

in case you didnt notice, arsenal is a dictatorship. only czsezny got away with it because he’s a keeper and hard to replace had he been sold. a decent keeper would have cost a fortune. at arsenal when you are at first team door make sure you stay in their good book and dont even complain in the paper and keep your head down otherwise you wil be sold. it happened to nordtveit last season, now its jet and lansbury should watch his back.
arsenal is an academy that patiently get the best out of young players so you cannot judge them if they are shown the door before they graduate. had song or walcott been sold before they developed maybe they could have still been sh*T.
like i said, only sczesny roughed them and treatened leave and still kept his place bcoz they cannot spend 15 millions on a number 1. jet can be replaced by a cheap kid from costa rica or burkina faso, no big deal!

The lower leagues are full of talented players who have been let go from bigger clubs for having bad attitudes. Look at Luke Chadwick – looked quality at times for Utd, but they let him go because of his attitude and everyone forgot about him.
And being hot-headed is not the same as having a bad attitude. Vieira would fight to the final whistle and inspire his team-mates to win. He would go too far at times, but he more than made up for it, as the results we got with him as CAPTAIN show.
Adebayor wasn’t particularly hot-headed imo, but he was supposed to have a bad attitude. That said, he scored tonnes of goals and still does at all levels, so his attitude can’t be THAT bad. He still works hard on the pitch.

You could say we kept Jay despite his attitude, as we did Adebayor. We let Adebayor go though, so we can just as well let JET go.

To be honest i think it is unfair to the kid that he is being sold. I think arsenal are in a conundrum…. they have so many deadweights that no one wants and as a result they have too many people waiting to transition from the reserve to the first team. I believe this plays a role in the irrational decision to let this kid go. I think he is a good player and how many of us at his age did not have problems. Truth be told money may have also brought out the beast in him but he is quality and could have been a good squad player at least for arsenal. Behind Aneke, Afobe and Bartley i think he is better than the rest. He would be surely missed. A change of scenery does well for players with personal issues. Lets hope he doesnt pull a ballotelli. My Gut tells me this decision would haunt us but im fine with it because it would make the reserves sit up knowing even talented players are expendable.

I don’t see the reason why so many people are freaking out. I think one of the best ways to evaluate a player is watch how people inside the football businness see said player. The fact Arsenal made all but clear that JET was available and only two Championship clubs came knocking on the door is enough to me. He’s still young, and probably will be a good player, but my bet is that he’ll never fulfil his true potential. In the end of the day, that’s what the guys at Arsenal have to decide. Hang on to him and his work ethics problem (only saw him at Cardiff, and became clear to me that the effort was missing) or release him and bet in another kid that can even be less talented, but brings the effort in a daily basis.
One thing that bothers me is the double standards that people uses to claim that the staff uses double standards of their own. The same people clamouring for veteran reinforcements cry when a young hypped up kid is released/loaned/sold. Wenger must buy God knows how many experienced english players, get rid of dead “foreign national teams’ starters” weight, and bring on half the academy to first-team, all in the same summer. They claim Arsenal lacks experience, but also think Rosicky (captain of his national team) has to make way for Lansbury.
And for all the talk about the failure of the youth system, check your facts straight. As this years team is still undefined, I’ll list only the youth products that were part of last season’s first team: Sczcesny, Djourou, Clichy, Gibbs, Song, Wilshere, Bendtner. That’s 5 starting players by the end of the season. Which other top table team brought that many youth players to the starting 11 in the last 5 decade? I know that support a club is a matter of passion, but tone down the histrionics, for Christ’s sake.

The first part is a ridiculous point. Any player that leaves Arsenal, Man Utd etc to go to Cheltenham or Rotherham by definition is never going to receive a fraction of the quality coaching he will have received here, so naturally is unlikely to progress. You’ll barely find a player in the lower leagues let go by ANY Prem club who will make that club regret, sadly it doesn’t happen any more.

Stokes has gone on to be the most prolfic scorer in the league for a pretty big side, that’s about as successful as a player who leaves will ever be.

If Cesc or Tony Adams were let go at 17 to Torquay or the Levante B side, I doubt very much you’d have ever heard from them again.

It’s amazing that so many people are whining about this without aknowledging that this is actually what is best for JET and Arsenal in the long run.

JET is 20 years old and needs to be playing regular first team football, we saw last year at Cardiff that whilst he is a great prospect (and this is never been in doubt) he is not yet ready for a regular starting spot in the Premiership. So we have 2 options we ever loan him out for a year in the championship and still not know how he will be in the premiership next season (at which point he will also be taking up an over 21 spot) or we sell him for a cheaper price with big add ons which will let him get the first team action he needs to kick start his development but will still mean that Arsenal benefit from the time and effort we put into developing him.

To keep hold of JET and risk harming his career just to ensure that Arsenal dont miss out on a player who may finally “click” and realise his potential would be incredibly selfish of the club, and that is not the way we do our business.

People knock Wenger for being overly-patient and loyal, giving too many chances to players and then they knock him for getting rid of someone who clearly doesn’t put the effort in that a professional at Arsenal Football Club should. It’s a shame about JET, he clearly has immense talent, but then the lower leagues and non-leagues are littered with players who had the talent but not the application – what we’d all give to have the opportunity JET has had. Give me a Ray Parlour over an Abou Diaby any day. If JET leaving creates the chance for more committed players then i’m all for it.

All last year I’ve been telling people about JET and how the local london blood is gonna help fight through the coming seasons but wenger shows once again he is scared of guys with a bit of swagger. JW is worth twice his ability becasue of his heart but wenger refuses to believe it. his philosophies were forged in the early 90s and he has hardly changed since. He is practically anti english football yet gets caught out by english grit time and again. explain to me why so many brought first team players are so willing to leave then? they know we are a soft touch.

Hi Jamie. I see from the Germany training session photos that it looks like Gervinho has been given the no.22 shirt. Do you have an update on any potential ‘no.9’? Is it likely that we will sign a new striker or promote from within?

An afterthought – if he’s so good, how come Cardiff didn’t enter the bidding at such a knock-down price? They had a good look at him last season and they must be hoping to be going for a promotion spot again this season. So why no interest?
    Food for thought.

Remember Cardiff wanted to extend his loan when he score the all important goal to get them to the play-offs. Then he help won and all important reserves match.

Their attitude changed when Cardiff was hammered during the play-off’s. The JeT had two bad games, but so did the entire Cardiff squad.

Watching Barcelona’s reserves control Internacional (Brazil). England desperately need B teams in England so young footballers can get a proper education all the way through to the professional ranks plus for people considered about lesser teams. Not all players will make it at the big clubs so the players that will leave and join these clubs at some point will be much better trained.

I don’t get why Wenger doesn’t buy Lukaku, now that Chelsea says they have enough strikers. Even at £20 millions he’d be worth it when considering his wages won’t be superstar wages in the beginning even though he already is a very good player, and he will be a guaranteed success. Already better than all our strikers bar Rvp.

What the JeT and every lad that goes through the youth system, play reserve football is an opportunity to prove themselves in the first team. Arsenal however want boys that is nice, by six years have taught us that nice boys finish last.

Everyone said of Patrick V, he has a bad attitude and at one stage the fear was that he would leave Arsenal, when as I remember Tony Adams persuade him to stay. He became captain and we call him legend. Arsenal must stop the practice of dangling carrots in front of our youth and start being upfront. Give the youths the truth and stop offering sweets. When you make a promise be ready to keep it otherwise you will experience more youngsters becoming very angry. It would be good to get feedback from a number of lads that have been thrown out of Arsenal. I guarantee we will see a pattern.

If the JeT had such a bad attitude as so many claim, why didn’t Arsenal get rid of him at ages: 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 etc, etc.

I personally would like to wish the JeT the very best for the future. He has delivered for Arsenal and his club let him down.

So far Arsene has put together a squad too weak to face the challenges of the coming season, Arsenal need athletes that can run a marathon. I expect us equal last seasons performance

a football academy thats getting rid of youth blaming their attitude is a failure.
its embarrassing and contradictory to believe that jet is being sold because of his attitude, why are we hanging on to samir nasri, he’s worse!
he actually wants cesc to go so he can lead arsenal midfield, hmmm the armband as well, or he’s off!
if cesc stays he will refuse to extend his contract.

If he’s being let go, rest assured that it will be with the full backing of the likes of Wenger, Bould and Brady. They know more about youth development than all of you complained. I’d trust their judgement.

while we are getting rid of jet armand traore is being sneaked back in the first team. jet will probably fill that position better than traore. and squillaci is still here.

Everyone complaining about how good JET is, is a moron. If he was anywhere near as good as you think, top prem clubs would be after him and he wouldn’t have left for a paltry million. How people can believe that the money and clubs chasing him doesn’t say it all is beyond me…

Brady have not got a clue of youth development and working with youngsters to fullfil their true potential. He is a liability, but does well to hide behind his past history as a reasonably good player.

His method of dealing with a youngster showing a little lip, is to get rid of them. “They must not disturb his rest”.

A wise move insofar as we have far too many players full stop, but particularly young fringe players and midfielders – well into the teens on both, so some have to go. I’d expect to see Eastmond & Watt out the door soon.

Add to that JET did not set the world alight at Cardiff and was dreadful in the play-offs.

All that said, Wenger shouldn’t escape this without flak. Another youngster who at times had great potential heads through the exit door without ever having been given a chance, like at least a dozen others, whilst an equally long list, Denilson, Diaby, Hoyte, Aliadiere and many more had a couple of seasons and more of consitently failing to deliver, yet remaining at the club.

By the way, I don’t anticipate Lansbury going, but I won’t be saying the same as this, if he does. Even sending out on his 684th loan will be pretty futile.

Its a shame Jet wasnt bought from Darlington or Southampton for 5 million as he would get 5 years to make 100 appearances and write childrens books. Sorry thats poster boy theo.
Wenger will be sacked for misplaced loyalty to 2nd rate french/european/african talent. He was never loyal to England youth players who could surpass denilson bendtner rosicky and walcott.
Good luck Jet go and get your career.

This is like Groundhog Day, reading these comments. I come to realise a couple of years back, our policy, our acadamies and especially our loaning out of players is almost exclusively about one thing – making money with probably 2-3 exceptions out of 100 in half a dozen years.

However frustrating that may be, you cannot deny that it works phenomenally well. Players like Jay Simpson, Ryan Smith, Larsson, pretty much all of them go for 1-3 million quid, most without a single appearance to their name. That’s a great income stream 8-10 million or year for players that do not play.

I’ve seen a lot players leave I would have liked to have seen been given a few games, if only to satisfy my own intrigue: Simpson, Nordvedt, Barazite, Stokes, Muamba, Quincy, Gilbert (for the first 10% of his time here) now JET too. David Noble was one of the best young players I’ve ever seen, but he disappeared into oblivion. I’ve learnt not to get too enamoured with young players.

If we find a Wilshere then fantastic, otherwise youth players are 95% replacable commodities to prop up the best revenue stream in the world for players that do not play.

at least one thing i am happy about, seeing wenger wielding his axe and getting rid of so many players. i am suspecting cesc is also included in the hit list with conditions that he goes for the right price. that back pass against barca sealed his fate, arshavin if the rumours are true. hopefully their replacements would do a better job next season

Some people need to take a hard look in the mirror and just realise they are horrible at judging talent. This big oaf got no future at a top 4 club, that much is certain. Same goes for Lansbury. These guys will do VERY well to end up at midtable PL clubs. The academy would do well to produce one player each year good enough for a top 4 club, and I think we reach that rate.

And all this talk about our ‘deadwood’. Rosicky, Chamakh, Bendtner and Diaby well they are starters and even star players for their national team. If they are not deemed good enough how on earth are players that are not even regulars at U-21 level gonna be good enough.

As a parent i would cut my wrists before allowing my son to play for this club. The academy is rotten with only 1 homegrown player eg u12 in 12 years. Its clear someone here is pocketing large sums of money on top of the 6% season ticket hike. Goodbye Cesc and Nasri hello 6th place

A disgrace that he has been booted out. JET, Lansbury and Wilshere from that World class youth team that won everything should have all been around the first team squad since last season. If Lansbury is to be booted out next for a pitance in all honesty I would rather Wenger left. Can you imagine a superior manager like Alex Ferguson letting such top class youngsters leave so early? The signs didn’t look good for JET when foolishly he was loaned out to Cardiff who already had Bothroyd and Bellemy amogst others playing up front, those two are on about the same level as Vela, Bendtner and Chamak. What the hell was the point of loaning him when he wasn’t going to be definately starting?

£1.1m? Fuck off Wenger you cunt.

was quite shocked to see this one, had high hopes for JET. I think that this ruthlessness will instill some fear however in the other players to pick up their game. Just wish it could have been the likes of denilson, almunia, bendtner who were made examples of. Shows how much we need a B team.

LMAO Ferguson and United haven’t promoted sucessful academy players for years. What on earth are people playing at.

JET and Lansbury are not even good enough to start for Championship teams, just sell them and move on. Jack, Chesny and Gibbs alone are worth 60m, it’s not like the academy is failing.

wenger is a classroom bully to junior players eg reserves but once you get into the first team he turns coward gets all loyal to players he can see are bottlers and 2nd raters the likes of denilson, almunia, bendtner and walclott. Its easier to cut a reserve player than a squad player because he hates admitting his mistakes. Hope Cesc and Nasri leave so he gets the tin tac this is Arsenal fc not Arsene fc.
