Miyaichi & Jenkinson Impress v Malaysia

Arsenal kicked off their pre-season with a 4-0 win against a Malaysia XI in Kuala Lumpur. Goals from Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott, Carlos Vela and Tomáš Rosický secured the win.

The game also saw Ryo Miyaichi and Jenkinson make their debuts, while a number of fringe youngsters also featured. How did they fair? Here’s my analysis.

Ryo Miyaichi
Miyaichi’s must anticipated debut whet the appetite for more. He began a little rusty on the ball, but showed a good work rate without it, chasing players down and not being afraid to make tackles. He linked up well with Gibbs, as the pair provided a real attacking spark down the left.

Ryo’s weakness is his pass selection after beating a full back. He didn’t seem to find the balance early on, but grew in confidence and provided a number of deep crosses as the half progressed. His skills, pace and raw enthusiasm were welcome qualities in the midfield. Tired late on, but impressive nonetheless.

Carl Jenkinson
Many criticised Arsene Wenger for signing £1 million Jenkinson at a time when Liverpool and Manchester United spent big on young English players. His debut, albeit against lowly opposition, gave enough indications that Wenger has got it spot on again.

Tall, strong and deceptively quick, Carl was clearly targeted with long diagonal balls. After initially struggling, he grew into the right back role and worked up a good understanding with Walcott. At home attacking or defending, his composure on the ball was impressive. Jenkinson has all the qualities to be a worthy back up to Bacary Sagna.

Other Mentions
Vito Mannone, Emmanuel Frimpong and Armand Traoré all came on at half time, all with points to prove. Mannone had little to do, but was harshly penalised for holding the ball too long in the box, leading to an indirect free-kick. Frimpong also saw little of the ball, but did keep play moving with a number of simple passes.

Traoré will get a chance to show his worth at left back during pre-season, and he left a good impression after a solid second half. A number of well timed and productive runs showed a better intelligence in selecting forays forward, while he also appared more composed in his defensive duties. A good start that he’ll look to build on.

All in all, a good run out.

I really couldn’t believe just how well Jenkinson fitted into the side. Miyaichi has some issues to be worked on but Jenkinson was excellent.

Probably something to do with him publicly stating in May he doesn’t wanna play for us anymore. Was annoyed he got any game time and pleased he got hauled off so quickly, offered nothing in his 20 minutes on the pitch, same old trotting around sideways passes.

I thought Miyaichi was very promising. Very shy , but with confidence and some integration could be more talented then wellington.

Jenkinson was good, he could be a very good backup. Traore was great going forward; a straight battle with Gibbs for LB. For me though MoM has to be between Wilshire and Vela.

After watching the match I thought Miyaichi had a quiet debut, on occasion he beat his man but his delivery was inconsistent.

Jenkinson showed good pace throughout but along with the other Arsenal defenders. Spent a lot of time running backwards after Malaysia penetrated the high line.

I was impressed by Traoré and Vela, both had a lot of touches on the ball and looked like they had points to prove. Was quite surprised Denilson only got 20 minutes, was he withdrawn because of injury? Does anyone know?

Jenkinson looked very very solid and even though he was playing against the fastest winger in malaysia he didnt ever beaten for pace
Miyaichi showed glimpses of his talent but it just the first game
Gibbs again looked good but I think Traore looked better both in attack and defense

I think the “knocked off the ball” point is telling. I really think Ryo will be great in a year or two, but it’s noticeable this happens to him quite a lot in the Dutch league. Imo if he started playing in the PL now, it would be similar to when theo started playing, and he would be exposed as not being ready. I hope he goes out on loan for another season somewhere

Ryo come directly form high school football to AFC and loan out straight to Feyenoord. I don’t blame him, he just been with us for less than a month. I think he is much better than Walcot based on the time and training.

I have say I do not agree. Vela is good(at sometimes even great) against lower league opponents, but mostly he seems to struggle with pressure. He is best suited as being subbed while in a four nil lead (ie no pressure) – at these times he manages to act as a clinical finisher but in my opinion he is not suited for a role in the starting XI or even useful in tight (high pressure – make it or break it) games. The great Dane also has this “problem”, but he is much more suited for tighter games, because he has on occasion hit the net in a tight game (which has later been the game winner)

Think people are overlooking Ramsey who my not have been motm but is so good that when not even at his best scores (should have had 2) and plays best assist for Walcott. How good can he be… every year we have 1 or 2 players go from being good to outstanding (last year Nasri and maybe Song)… my tips for next season… Ramsey and Walcott.

I think Vela will lift himself above Chamakh as natural understudy to RVP. Although Chamakh will still be useful as the target man in different situations. Vela also has the flexibility to play in the hole or on either flank. This could be his year (without getting carried away, as one more lob dont make him a great player)

I love watching Vela, and he’s a centre forward with great potential… but I’m not sure he fits into our system against top Premier League sides because he’s not the best lone striker presence. He’s great in a 4-4-2 or against CBs who aren’t big and burly, but lacks great playmaking/holdup skills

its amazing how far Traore grey at Juve, its gonna be an interesting fight between him and Gibbs for that position.

Miyachi looks like he’s gonna be a handful with some training.

Vela might just deserve more game time

Jenkinson is the real deal as a backup for Sagna! No need to worry about Sagna getting tired and having to play every game, I’ve got much faith in the giant RB. He’s got the crosses that Sagna lacks and the pace, needs to work a lil more on his starting positions and timing of his runs.. and its gonna be very interesting for him.

Verm once again proved what we missed last season. He and Kos make a great partnership. Both ball playing CB who are willing to interchange easily, both with some pace on them… both great at interceptions..

Vela: Shows yet again that he knows where the goal is. Such a classy finisher! Hope he gets his chances this season!

Miyaichi: Need some more time to get into the team, but you can see that he has talent. Very quick, good technique and tries different things. Looks very promosing!

Midfield: We need to maintain better shape and defend/close down the opposition much faster and better like Barc with their great work rate.
Attack: We need to take shots in and around the box and be much more clinical.

    Carl Jenkinson was quality!

There few a times when he made foward runs only for song, rosicky, frimpong to give the ball away and jenkinson had to run back.

He didnt really get caught out of position in terms of the long diagonal balls!

he got caught because of his team mates giving the ball away!

He showed great ability on the ball as well! He looks up when he goes foward!

Could have had 2 assists with the vermaelen header and vela header.

Sagna has to watch out! Carl Jenkinson looks like he has more to his game than sagna

Just got back from the game. Denilson was NOT booed. I think Wenger played him, to get some interest for a transfer. Jenkinson grew into the game, but he needs time, cos at the moment he is a RB not an Arsenal RB who bombs down the wing. Traore was very impressive. The thing that I will miss about Clichy was his interceptions and his attacking intent while being defensively sound (And all haters can only complain that he would switch off on quite a few occassions). But Traore eased those fears. Was not that impressed with Gibbs and his attacking support for Myiachi. Someone said Jenkinson was fast, did not seem so in the first half and the opposition kept playing long balls down the right and he appeared to lack in pace. Ramsey and Wilshere are the future but not the current replacement for Cesc or Nasri. Minimal creativity or attack in the first half with these two. The game was more interesting with Rocky, and Nasri/RVP/Arshavin then gave us cruise control. Impressed with Vela but I wouldn’t jump the gun just yet, cos with the good he also exhibited the bad. ie. failure to score the second.

Manone was annoying and deserved his card (if he got one). The time wasting was completely unnecessary especially with so many options infront of him.

No offense but what game were you watching? I am not going to give an anti Jenkinson and Myachi speech because I think they will are good players and this was just a little friendly but I am not sure what you were “Impressed” by.

Ryo if you did not know him before and judged him by this game, you would not have been impressed at all. He rarely ran at players with skill and most of the time when he did get passed the defender it was from a lucky mistake or touch. He has talent but lets not write reports that give off the wrong perception.

Carl Jenkinson got up and down the pitch but other then that I am not sure what you saw in the performance. Yes I guess he recovered well when he lost his man and the winger got in behind him but what I saw was that if he let quality players in those positions then he will get burned. In attack he never really did much. He didn’t really get great crosses in or link up well and when there was a player to beat he kind of looked lost for ideas.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am not slating these 2 because they are good young talents. I am just responding in a realistic way to the article which I think is very misleading This was just the first friendly so they will get time to show what they got.

    A couple things.

Does anyone else find watching Chamahk play striker to be somewhat comical? I mean I have never seen a less dangerous striker in my life. The defenders don’t even have to mark him. We all know exactly what he is going to do every time he gets the ball and to me it is just funny to watch him any time he gets in a goal scoring position or a position to take on a player he becomes extremely awkward. Regardless of whether he is an Arsenal player or not, I just find him funny to watch.

Now on Vela, I honestly feel we have the new David Villa on our hands. He is simply class to me and when he plays striker with our best players he will bag goals for fun.

how do you expect an 18 years old to perform first time in arsenal. no one is expecting him shine in his first season coz obviously he’s gonna be a sub while he’s learning arsenal style of play. we expect him to be rusty and its normal. the most important thing is they all did well in this insignificant game.
apart from denilson of course. it looks like he’s not gonna be a starter and he will cause disruption in the dressing room i am not sure he’s gonna develop to a good player but its all up to arsene.

See you did not read properly. I am not a hard person to please. I am a realist. I do watch something and then make false comments on what has not actually happened. I am not being negative on the players. They did to some extent what you would expect from them as young newcomers in their first game in a friendly. I just am responding to the article where it paints a picture that did not actually happen. I have seen Ryo play plenty of times and he is very impressive talent. That doesn’t mean we have to pretend like he was impressive in this game because that is flat out false and is what is often referred to as “hype” or “a hype job”. Sorry if you took my comment the wrong way or out of context. cheers

1 more thing. Our wingers play way to wide for me especially when a Chamahk is playing up top. In the formation we play, they need to be more wide forwards and get in scoring positions and take on defenders. We are not a team that is going to send a lot of crosses in so what is the point in them being way out there.

On Walcott, I feel we need to use him to his strengths more. He is simply not a winger. How wide he often is for us takes away the things he is good at. Look at when Walcott is at his best. He runs of the ball diagonally in behind the defense and receives a ball through and no body is going to catch him and then he is a quality finisher. When he makes these runs he does great. The problem is that we need to do these runs more often. Stop trying to make Walcott some kind of link up player or tricky dribbling winger because that he is never going to be. He is a pacy finisher so use it.

By the way, 3 years ago I made comments on the fact that I though Traore had just as much potential as Gibbs and everyone slated that thought. Traore to me has all the physical tools to be a top right back. The main thing that will determine whether he will become a top class left back or just a player with talent is whether he can learn how to read the game properly. He needs to improve his defensive positioning by leaps and bounds from the last time he played for us. You never know tho….he is one that could turn out great or be a flop. Time will tell tho.

I remember Traore being way too error prone when he was playing for Arsenal and was often beaten by attackers. I hope that Wenger signs an experienced LB because I wouldn’t trust Traore for important games.

Because I made different comments about different topics? Sorry you are unable to form an opinion on things. I apologize mate. Maybe you should try to responding with a proper rebuttal to my comments rather then writing a pointless comment about me.

You bullies jumping on the Denilson bashing bandwagon are a disgrace. A Malaysian supporter confirmed that Denilson was not booed and he was substituted as he got a knock. Arsene also confirmed that he only intended to give him a quick run out because he was carrying a small injury. As for what he said at the end of the season, what was actually so bad? It’s nothing compared to some of the things our captain has said but it doesn’t surprise me that none of you would have the balls to criticise him and lap it up everytime he claims he was misquoted when he is caught out.

What numbers did the players who haven’t got a first team number wear? E.g Szczesny, Miyachi, Frimpong and Jenkinson?

Except neither of them actually said the things that were reported in the papers. The Spanish press fabricated the Fabregas stories from nothing – no quotes, y’see. The Denilson quotes were completely twisted, and absolutely fine in context: in response to a direct questionhe said that Arsenal don’t have a natural leader (whatever that is) and that all the players need to take responsibility for the team, which is completely true.

I think some people have trouble believing that the papers flat-out lie to them, but when it comes to sports news, it’s absolutely true.

I know we don’t agree on everything, but once again you’re presenting something that’s at least a sensible opinion. Shame more people can’t do the same.

Like you, I also thought Traore had something a couple of seasons back, but he never looked defensively very sound. I could see him turning into a top quality winger along the lines of what the Spuds think Bale is.

For sure mate. Whether we disagree or not, at least you always make points when having a discussion with me. I can’t stand the people that have discussions by saying either “he is awesome/ great/ amazing” or “He is shit/ Horrible” and that is it. cheers mate

the last couple of seasons many afc fans have seen everthing as either absolute or crap or sheer brilliance with nothing in between, shane just seems to be giving a straight down the middle opinion (although i think we all need some feel good factor at the moment ) on a personel note i believe bentner offers more all round than chamack

lol.. I was writing the same thing as you and did not even see your comment. I understand peoples need for a feel good factor but building false hope often leads to an even bigger let down. I also find we have a perfect example for this today.

2 months ago people argue that Vela and Traore are awful and should be sold immediately. A few months forward and 1 friendly game verse Malaysia and now people think Traore has what it takes and is awesome and Vela is going to be a great striker lol.

On your personal note, I completely agree. Bendtner is a better player then Chamahk. The difference is could you see Bendtner being RVPs back up with out moaning about it for much longer? Chamahk to me is a good depth player or situational player. Vela to me is ready to be RVPs back up and Gervinho as well.

You know what I find most funny about comments on hear. The same people to claim a player did amazing (when the truth is they didn’t) are the same people that after I couple bad games will claim that the player is horrible. Some people need a little perspective.

Traore always flatter to deceive. He folds up in big games. Arsene don’t rate him after giving him many opportunities and coming short. He tried to flog him twice.

Simply put, under pressure, Traore’s defending is shit.

You would agree that he has the physical tools and talent on the ball to make it tho? Yah his short comings really came in positioning but that is something that a player can improve on.

I remember 2 seasons ago when Traore gave that stunning cross-field pass to Walcott on the run from just outside his own box for a great 2 second counter-attack goal.. Something cliche would never think of doing. He’s always had his defensive flaws.. but he’s a lot more capable in attack than cliche. He also looked much better playing for Juve which must mean he’s learnt something there… it may also show that we do have some issues in our defensive coaching.

Jenkinson was playing against one of the paciest players in Malasia, and he won almost every race down the flank coming from a position higher up the pitch. Most of the time, he was only caught out because the ball was given away and quickly lobbed. I personally don’t believe they were picking on him specifically, but they were picking out their fastest player for the counter.. and it almost never worked out because Jenkinson recovered well enough to either take the ball away, or be in a position to stop the cross… that’s really all you can ask for from an 18 yr old RB right shane?

@Shane yes they werent overall very impressive.at the moment we cant send jenkinson out on loan,as there is no backup
for sagna but if he made the same number of errors against a premier league side then the whole team could get punished as a result.i think arsenal should try to get a work permit for ryo, interestingly he took on a few defenders which most our players dont usually do,if do win a permit then wenger will have a though decision to make whether or not to loan him.frankly i would like him to be loaned out to a club like bolton, everton,
westbrom,or one of the new club, great to read these comments about traore always thought he was better than gibbs, now he’s proving it.but we still need a defensive midfielder & a classy striker obvious we are in need of a cb,no matter how good squilacci was against Malaysia.this is it for vela time time to prove his potencial time for him to start with the first team or else its curtains, whether or not he’s the new david villa

Sorry Dave I live in Spain and I have seen some interviews that you havent.
I particularly dislike one at Marina D´OR which is a holiday complex where cesc says “I know one thing, I want to join Barcelona if they want me or not is another matter”
OK Dave? I hope you can find that interview!

Denilson recieved a knock and was imjured before the game. thus was subbed after 20 as agreed with AW on beforehand.

jenkinson was targeted all the time and did some great work. Good interceptions all the way. Very impressive for a kid that 2 montsh ago played for was it charlton? Very impressed.
Ryo however, i agree with shane, he did not impres me asmuch as i thought he would. But Jenkinson. he will be a star.

Living in Spain doesn’t give you a monopoly on seeing that stuff. Wonders of the internet, y’know? I’ve seen that interview, if it’s the one I think it is, as I’m sure we all have. (And it wasn’t this year, go figure.)

As I said, though, you’re letting the Spanish media twist things – Fab said he would like to play for Barca _one day_ – not that he wants to leave Arsenal now. Whoop-de-do, big deal. It’s been obvious for years that he has a deep emotional attachment to both clubs, and is a bit torn between them.

OK Dave fine but cesc will leave no doubt about it, i would be extremely surprised if he stayed. Barcelona are cunts and therefore we should stop doing business with them, we let them train at LC before the CL final and look what they are doing now, absolute bastards…
I am happy we signed Toral Harper cause he actually wants to stay with us, he is half english but Bellerin… he will end up going back, we really dont need these stupid signings. So Dave, dont get your hopes up about cesc staying cause he isnt ok?

I think what you’re missing is that Fab wants to play for both clubs (although obviously he can’t). He doesn’t want to leave Arsenal, he doesn’t want to not go to Barca.

As a result, it’ll be a lot easier to persuade him to stay than the papers pretend. Sure, he’ll probably play for Barca at some point, but I doubt he’ll move this summer or next.

What people fails to realise is that Barca is his boyhood club. OF COURSE he wants to play there someday.
I don’t know you guys, but as a kid I didn’t support Arsenal. I’m brazilian, and didn’t even knew Arsenal existed until 1998, when I saw a note at a local paper.
Why I’m telling that? Because obviously Arsenal isn’t my boyhood club, it’s Atletico Mineiro (the club Arsenal bought Gilberto Silva). If I had become a great player and sold before I’ve got the chance to play pro football at Atletico I’d like to come back someday and do that. I think if it happened to any of you, you’d want that chance too.
Why Fabregas is not entitled to that? He’s not asking for a transfer. When playing for Arsenal, even against Barcelona, he gives his max (remember the penalty kick he made against Barca at that 1st leg in 2010, barely standing on his own?) What else can he do? It’s not like he will speak against his boyhood club. All he can do is play for Arsenal, until he’s not here. And for all the fuss made about it, it’s what he’s been doing all these years.
