Stevenage 0-1 Arsenal XI: Aneke Bags Winner

A second half Chuks Aneke strike gave an Arsenal Reserve XI a 1-0 over Stevenage this afternoon. In an end-to-end encounter, the returning Henri Lansbury and the in form Aneke combined for a superb winner.

The Gunners were forced to rotate with Benik Afobe and Conor Henderson joining the first-team in Germany, while James Shea was absent after beginning a trial at Dagenham and Redbridge. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Kyle Bartley were other notable omissions, with both players strongly linked with moves away from the club.

ARSENAL: Charles-Cook; Yennaris, Hajrovic, Boateng, Brislen-Hall; Aneke, Özyakup, Galindo; Lansbury, Freeman, Watt.

In a mixed first period, Arsenal struggled to get their passing football together and only carved out two real chances. Freeman had the first, but the former Gillingham striker blazed over the bar. Then, following some pressure from the hosts, Boateng could have opened the scoring, but he saw a powerful head go wide.

The Gunners found their way in the second half, and as Galindo and Lansbury began to find their range, Arsenal kicked on. With time running out, Lansbury fed Aneke on the edge of the box, and just as he did against Woking, the powerful midfielder turned and lashed home. 1-0.

Ansah and Meade came off the bench late on, but as Stevenage searched for an equaliser, they were on defensive duties. As time ticked down, rookie stopper Charles-Cook thwarted the hosts twice with stunning saves, including one in the 90th minute to preserve the win and Arsenal’s unbeaten pre-season run.

is JET the guy who replaced diaby against chelsea he looked promising to me and fast.thot he would get a run in the ‘diaby position’.he looked more confident than denilson.

I’m disappointed JET couldn’t do enough to force his way into the side. We could do with someone with his physical presence in the squad. Bartley’s omission is the biggest surprise though, maybe it’s just not meant to be for the both of them. I can’t wait to see Afobe, Chamakh and Gervinho in Germany now.

Good win. I wish we could get video of these games.

On the first team game. WTF is Gibbs doing. Half of the time he forgets he is the left back. In the 42nd minute he ends up jogging back in the right center mid position when Cologne are on a break away. Other times he stays way to high up the pitch. Talented players but I sure hope some one speaks to him about his positioning.

On Gervinho, I hope everyone got a good glance of what he does. He bags goal. Like I said, 12 to 15 goals in the premier league this year.

He gives the team more movement and more options, allowing the others in the front 3 to move around and create more dynamics, and he is lethally fast! We’ll see a lot more goals from the front 3. I believe he could be our highest scorer this season. :)

I don’t understend why traore wasn’t in team against cologne? I think that gibbsy is BAD BAD BAD solution for left back position. He is talented player but a LW position is more natural for him. Arsenal allways had good left and right backs, that was never an issue but now I think that even those positions are under question mark after selling clichy and buying Jenkinson as Sagna’s deputy. I hoped that this season we will get stronger but all these problems plus cesc/nasri uncertanity OH MY GOD, BAD TIMES AHEAD OF US.

I completely agree with you shane, kieran Gibbs although he’s an exceptionally good footballer you can tell he’s not been trained as a left back, his positioning is shocking at times and I think that any defender should put defending first and attacking second, our 2 centre backs are left so exposed by quick counter attacks due the lack of cover, why would any centre back of good standard wanna play for us?!

Calm down Gibbs will come good eventually. Remember, both Cashley and Clichy were very poor initially.

I think Gibbs has qualities to be a great attacking left back. All I am saying is somebody better talk to him about his positioning soon or we will get burnt this year.

John, first off none of us take you seriously but for some reason I can’t help but respond. You can literally go to the 42nd minute where he ends up jogging back down the wrong side of the pitch as cologne attack down his empty left back spot. There are other times where he is just standing way to high up the pitch and then often just jogs back. No body is talking about when he is involved in the build up you muppet. Gibbs needs to understand POSITIONING!

      Does caps really help? lol

People stop hijacking the post, this is not about the first team!

Anyway does anyone know how aneke’s doing? i remember early last season people were getting hyped up about him and it went quiet. Does he look near first team ready? and whats his best position these days? seems to me his best chance with us is in a busquets type role

Fuck off. We all read the post for the updates on the youth team but we can’t watch the matches or anything so it is not like we can talk for ever about the youth team. I believe this place has the most true supporters tho because they are actually interested in more then just signing big names so this is the best place to discuss Arsenal as a whole.

where is the problem if bartley goes on loan? he could get 5 games at arsenal this season and 20-30 on loan! and yea, for the first time i saw afobe, it was only for 30 seconds but the boy looks very strong and fast for his age.

lansbury should also go on loan and when rosicky retaires he can take his place than, i would say in a year or two.

I’m afraid that some talented players from this group will never make it at arsenal like aneke, ozzy and J.Thomas, there is just not enough room in first team to take youngsters

Jamie, you wrote on your twitter account “The two Barça kids, then Akpom, Lipman and Jebb. We’ve got quite a few at present.” What about Gnabry? I’ve read he’s considered the biggest german talent in his age group.
