Video – Emmanuel-Thomas Bags Brace & Looks To The Future

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas is looking forward to a long and fruitful Arsenal career after scoring a classy brace on his first start for Doncaster Rovers on Saturday. The 19-year-old was applauded by both sets of fans when substituted seven minutes from the end in the 5-2 rout over Bristol City.

Emmanuel-Thomas had a spell with Blackpool earlier in the season where he scored twice, and that form appears to have been transported to Yorkshire. Now the leggy utility man admits he doesn’t know how long he’ll be away from Arsenal if he continues his excellent form.

“I don’t know how long I will be at Doncaster. Arsenal wanted me back after I spent a month with Blackpool earlier this season so we will have to wait and see.”

“Every game I play and all the hard work I do is aimed at making my dream of playing for Arsenal come true.”

Issues in the past with his attitude and professionalism now appear to be finally put to bed, thanks to some words from veteran defender Sol Campbell. The 35-year-old has taken ‘JET’ under his wing and offered some words to make sure the Forest-Gate born youngster stays on track for a fantastic career in football.

“Sol has been through the ups and downs of football and is a great person for a young player like myself to speak to. He knows the game inside out and has talked to me about how to live my life off the field and how to deal with various situations.”

Rovers boss Sean O’Driscoll labelled Jay ‘perfect’ for Doncaster after the 5-2 win, of which you can see highlights of below. Operating just behind striker Billy Sharp, both goals displayed superb composure in front of goal.

Ebuzzing Goes Live In The UK

One of the most exciting innovations for bloggers in recent years has finally arrived in the United Kingdom. Ebuzzing is a network which brings writers closer to big brand names and a chance to develop the monetisation of their respective websites.

Ebuzzing is a network which can be used by advertisers or website owners with the aim to promote various projects, products and services. This is acheived in two ways. Sponsored articles and videos. The articles are written by the blog owner and therefore their personal style can be used to effectivly put across a message to their readers in a familar fashion. Adsene style videos are another option, all methods are designed to blend into your current content:

So what do you have to do to get started? just register on ebuzzing.com and check for campaigns. You’ll recieve e-mails and notifcations about some of the bigger opportunities so you’re always kept in the loop about the best projects around. Bloggers can even set their own price per article.

All links within the articles come with the “no follow” tag, so that search engines don’t mistake the links as being bought by advertisers as “paid links”. Ebuzzing really is the perfect network for bloggers to monetize their work and with quick and easy assistance just an e-mail away, the service is notably slick.

All this, plus Ebuzzing is now setup with the aim at attracting UK bloggers. The more who sign up, the more advertisers, the more campaigns. So what are you waiting for?

SKA Sunday: Craig Eastmond – Next Up For The First Team?

He’s regarded among Gooners worldwide as a respected commenter and his forays into the Arsenal blogging scene have been highly successful. Now, former journalist and avid fan Mike Urbanski has joined the Young Guns team to offer his analytical inside into all things Arsenal Reserves and Youth. Known among many as SKA Gooner, his new Sunday column – SKA Sunday – kicks off today.

As we’re all aware from reading Young Guns, the Arsenal are building up an absolutely fantastic pipeline of young talent that will pay dividends in the first team for years to come. But the goal for all Arsenal youth and reserve players isn’t to be a youth or reserve “wonder kid”. The goal is to be a first team Arsenal player. While not long in the reserve system, we’ve all been thrilled to watch Aaron Ramsey develop into a real force for Arsene Wenger’s first team this season. Another young talent who I feel strongly will see a similar progression over the next 12 to 18 months is Craig Eastmond. His time is rapidly arriving.

Recently on the Official Arsenal website, Liam Brady was interviewed about the current crop of starlets populating the youth & reserve sides. You’re all familiar with the names at this point – Jack Wilshere, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, Sanchez Watt, etc. Mentioned for special comment though was Craig Eastmond and the progress he’s been making.

Of Eastmond, Brady said “He’s surprised me. He’s only going to get better. He’s got a good mentality and he’s tough as well. He wasn’t maybe one of the highlighted stars from last years’ Cup winning team, but everyone knew what a good player he was.”

Lets examine several areas of development and assess the future first team prospects for Craig Eastmond.

Defensive Mid or Right Back? – This is THE question for Craig right now. Honestly, this is a bit of a tough call at the moment.

Starting out as, and getting the bulk of his reserve playing time at right back, Eastmond has progressed apace through Liam Brady’s system. With his speed, Eastmond could be an absolute demon coming forward on the right flank and possesses the wherewithal to recover quickly when possession changes demand. Given how much we use Sagna, Clichy and Eboue in the attack, crossing will have to be a critical part of his development if he’s to remain at right back. I’ve not yet seen enough of his crossing ability though to accurately assess his true value while on the front foot. Has the physical skill and tenacious mentality to be an imposing obstacle, defensively, at right back.

However, having reviewed the match footage from the Bolton away tilt in January, I’ve seen enough of Craig to believe I’m seeing a defensive mid in the making. I’m reminded a bit of the flashes we saw from Alex Song late last season when his potential really came to the fore. Much will depend on how Eastmond develops physically over the next couple years and we’ll have to see if he can get that bit of nastiness that Alex Song has acquired this year. But there’s no denying the ability to challenge on the ball, win headers and put a halt to an opposing attack from a central position.

Speed – Craig has the speed to get forward on occasion as a defensive mid or turn the right flank into a real nightmare zone for opposing backs. Excellent speed in recovery & closing and will not often lose a foot race to the outlet unless facing an attacker or winger with top class speed. Eastmond has excellent direct line speed in both the short burst/recovery and long sprint to close down a breaking winger when playing right back.

Mindset – Defensive minded, but joins the attack a bit more than the usual DM. Eastmond connects well with the back four when tracking back. Much like Alex Song or Abou Diaby, Eastmond looks to quickly turn a defensive stop into an outlet to an attacking teammate. As a right back, I would put him more in the category of Eboue than Sagna simply because of his offensive propensity.

On the ball – Good in possession if not challenged too tightly when coming forward. Not a long possession player currently, although that might be due more to the speed/skill difference between reserve and first team play and this can be developed more as time goes on. Has quite good vision of the pitch and seems already to possess the ability to see creative possibilities when passing.

Physical – Eastmond possesses a good bit of grit. He’s not the most imposing player on the pitch, but there’s no denying his ability and desire to get stuck in. He will need to put on some bulk and muscle though, regardless of his final position in the Arsenal first team.

Positioning – This is the one area where Craig needs work, especially as a DM. He still “follows play” sometimes more than anticipating. Again, at this point it could be more related to the speed/skill difference between reserve and first team play. In reviewing the Bolton match from January, I noticed a tendency to drift in front of the back four at times without involving himself in the run of play. Has to “go to the game” instead of letting the game come to him, so to speak.

Where does he go from here? – Much like our “just tell me where to line up” man, Emmanuel Eboue, Craig Eastmond has a range of skills that could see him slotted in at several positions. This is a great bonus for Craig and for Arsenal. Combining speed, intelligence and toughness with a thought or two to peek at the goal on occasion, there are any number of ways that he can benefit the first team side when the time comes. The Arsenal first team have offensive-minded defenders in the form of Thomas Vermaelen and Eboue. Craig Eastmond could well develop into the same type of player at right back, but I believe he’s more suited to the defensive midfielder role at the moment.

As with all reserve players looking to make the leap to first team action, Craig will need match minutes. Depending on whether or not one specific position is decided upon, I would not rule out a loan spell to gain minutes. Given a bit more development time, adding a bit of bulk and following the leadership of Arsene Wenger and the first teamers ahead of him, Craig Eastmond will soon find himself called upon regularly to provide needed depth in critical areas at the Emirates.

Loanees – Wilshere, Simpson & Emmanuel-Thomas Score

Welcome to this weekends Loanees Watch – Young Guns’ analysis, reports and updates on the progress of the young starlets currently plying their trade away from the Emirates Stadium. You can read all the latest reports below.

In The Premier League…

Jack Wilshere played 78 minutes and scored for Bolton against West Ham United. The prospect began the game in flying form and after Kevin Davies had scored, Davies provided a knock down for Wilshere to volley home his first Premier League goal. He looked a menace all throughout the game but was eventually withdrawn late in the second half.

In The Championship…

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas played the full 90 minutes and scored twice on his first start for Doncaster Rovers. Playing just behind fellow loanee Billy Sharp, Jay took just two minutes to get on the score-sheet, tapping home from close range. He got his second with two minutes of the first half left.

Jay Simpson racked up another 90 minutes and scored for Queens Park Rangers as Neil Warnock’s rein as R’s boss got under way. Jay grabbed the opener with just 13 minutes of the first half gone, finishing well to add to his already impressive goal tally for the season.

Henri Lansbury started and completed the game for Watford as they lost 2-0 to Gilles Sunu’s Derby.

Kyle Bartley turned in another solid 90 minutes for Sheffield United, but his hunt for clean sheets was spoilt when Alan Lee scored after 23 minutes. The powerful centre back had to make a number of tidy interceptions in a typically rugged Championship fixture.

In League One…

Mark Randall earned a rare start for the MK Dons. Mark has been out of favour by manager Paul Ince but he recalled the central midfielder and it proved to be a good move. Randall played well, with the only blot on his copy book a yellow card for unsporting behavior.

Wojciech Szczesny played the complete game for Brentford against table topping Leeds. The Polish stopper had to be at his agile best to deny a flurry of chances at Elland Road. Brentford grabbed the lead but Jermaine Beckford finally found a way beyond Szczesny in a tight encounter.

Freeman Scores As Arsenal Beat Ireland

Luke Freeman scored the winner for an Arsenal XI against the Republic of Ireland Under 19’s this afternoon. The Gunners hosted the Irish youth side at London Colney but there was little hospitality Arsenal as ran out 1-0 winners.

The side had a largly young feel to it, with captain Luke Ayling one of the older statesman in a side which included Under 18 captain Cedric Evina and young Spanish defender Ignasi Miquel. Freeman’s decisive strike was his 17th of the season.

Derby Want ‘Very Exciting’ Sunu For Next Season

Derby County manager Nigel Clough has revealed his intent to keep loan Arsenal winger Gilles Sunu for a second spell at Pride Park. The Frenchman has only featured twice for the Rams, but Clough has been suitably impressed with the 18-year-old and a year-long-loan next term is already on the cards.

Sunu made his first Derby start on Saturday away to West Brom, where he tormented Albion’s former Porto full-back Marek Cech throughout the game. However, the rugged and powerful nature of life in the Championship took effect late on and a clearly exhausted Gilles left the field with 10 minutes left. Yet in the 80 minutes previous, Clough saw enough to realise his latest dip into the transfer market looks to be a firm success.

“I think you saw once we get the ball to his feet and he is running at the full-back, he looks very exciting indeed. He did that one or two times in the first half and a couple of times in the second half.”

“Sunu was that tired after the game he fell asleep on the coach coming back. It is a big, big step up for him at 18, coming from Arsenal Reserves, but we think he is going to improve. He is still learning about the Championship which is vastly different to playing for Arsenal Reserves. It is a great experience for him.”

Gilou flew out yesterday to be the French Under 19 squad along with Francis Coquelin. The pair are to set to play two games in three days against Ukraine before he returns ahead of Saturday’s Championship fixtures. His new manager is taking his analysis of the powerful prospect game by game, but the future looks bright and Clough is keen to cash in on Sunu’s talents for next season.

“We are looking at him for next season as well, may be on a longer term loan. To do that, we have to put him out there and see how he does. I thought he did OK, not bad at all.”

Young Guns will have coverage of all the exploits of our international youngsters during this forthcoming week.

Watt Returns To Arsenal After Unsuccessful Southend Loan

Sanchez Watt has returned to Arsenal after deciding against extending his loan with Southend United for a second month. The winger failed to make a substantial impact during his time at Roots Hall and returns to North London with an aim on featuring for the first-team.

Watt has turned out four times for United in which the prospect has been kicked and fouled out of almost every game. Manager Steve Tilson confirmed this afternoon that the winger left in the hope that he can be available for Arsène Wenger’s first-team squad in the final run in.

“Sanchez enjoyed his stay. He feels though it’s best for him to go back to Arsenal for the remainder of the season. With Arsenal still in contention for the title going into the final few months of the season he wanted to be around their first team in the hope he’ll be involved at some stage.”

The 19-year-old recently penned fresh terms with Arsenal and a second loan spell in the future seems imminent as Sanchez looks to put the finishing touches to his development

Video – Arsenal’s Wellington In The Goals Again

Arsenal striker Wellington Silva was in the goals again this weekend as he scored one and made one in a 5-1 win for parent-club Fluminense. The exciting Brazilian, 65% owned by the Gunners, helped gun down Friburguense’s first-team in the Rio Cup.

Silva grabbed the second in the 20th minute. Keeping composed, he took the ball first time on his chest before slotting home on the re-bound. The 17-year-old made the third in the second half, where he crossed with the outside of his foot after beating his man.

You can view full highlights below. Wellington’s goal is timed at (4.30) while his assist at (8.00).

Arsenal’s Forgotten Loanees

Henri Lansbury, Gilles Sunu, Jay Simpson and Jack Wilshere are just a few of the Arsenal youngsters gaining valuable experience out on loan at their respective English clubs. Some will see it as a chance to enhance their first team opportunities at Arsenal, whilst for others it as an opportunity to impress potential suitors for an inevitable transfer in the summer.

There are also two players plying their trade in Europe; Pedro Botelho and Havard Nordtveit. Both seem to have slipped under the radar when discussing the future of Arsenal Football Club, but they are two players intent on breaking in to the first team.

After captaining the Reserves during his first season at the club, Havard made is way to foreign shores and linked up with Arsenal’s feeder club; Salamanca. There he joined fellow loanee, Pedro Botelho, who had already spent some time at the Spanish club. However, after a contentious, short period with Salamanca, Havard left with little experience and was shipped out to his native Norway where he signed for Lillestrom until the end of the season.

This season Havard agreed to join Bundesliga new-comers Nuremberg on a year loan deal that, so far, has been another topsy-turvy experience. An impressive start to his campaign included a notable debut against Alexander Hleb’s Stuttgart, followed shortly after by a historical away win at champions Wolfburg, winning 3-2, with Havard playing a vital role in the centre of midfield. Yet since Dieter Hecking’s sacking in December, Havard has struggled with injuries, playing time, and form under new coach Michael Oenning. Nevertheless Havard’s rollercoaster of a ride will certainly help the Norwegian appreciate the rigours of first team football in a competitive league.

Pedro Botelho is a marauding full-back signed from Brazilian outfit Figueirense back in January 2008. Pedro grew up in Salvador, a party town on the East coast of Brazil, where tourism is high, the parties are wild and the ladies are stunning. The town’s character seems to match Pedro’s laid back persona.

Rumours that the reason Pedro’s time was cut short with feeder club Salamanca was due to his extra training sessions with the Chairman’s daughter are not helpful. This season the South American has been rampaging down the left for Spanish outfit Celta Vigo and played a key part in the famous Copa del Rey victory over Villarreal; winning a late penalty. The Brazilian has enjoyed relative success so far, despite Celta Vigo’s poor position in the league. With Armand Traore failing too impress this season, Wenger may be tempted to offload the Frenchman and bring in the charismatic Brazilian, that is if he is able to curb his party attitude.

Wenger is often keen to give his young foreign protégé’s the chance to impress, particularly if a lot of time has been spent developing their skills. So come September there are likely to be two new faces in the first team squad, and despite neither player clocking up any minutes for the Arsenal first team as of yet, these forgotten loanees will be hoping to make a name for themselves next season.
