Bellerin Scores As Arsenal Beat Watford

Steve Bould’s Under 18’s kicked off their pre-season preparations with a 2-0 win over Watford this morning.

Bould, who heads into the new season with one of his biggest squads yet, will use a selection of behind closed doors fixtures to decide who will play an integral part, and who may be forced to leave the club.

The first of those was today against Watford. The Gunners played some good football and won the game 2-0, thanks to goals from the lethal Zak Ansah, plus a debut strike from winger Héctor Bellerín.

Botelho Set To Join Rayo Vallecano

Pedro Botelho is expected to join La Liga new comers Rayo Vallecano on loan in the next 24 hours.

The Brazilian had been hoping for a chance to break into the Arsenal first-team, following four successive loan spells in the Spanish Segunda. The latest, a season spent with FC Cartagena, was his best yet. Pedro turned himself into a hero in Murcia, scoring four goals in 39 appearances.

However, despite that impressive form, Arsène Wenger told the 21-year-old he would not be given a chance at Arsenal until he’d played in La Liga. A deal appeared close to join former manager Juan Ignacio Martínez at Levante, but that fell through last week.

Pedro has now arrived in Spain to begin his season long loan move, in the hope that its his last spell away from the Gunners.

Hastings 0-9 Arsenal: JET Shines In Rout

Arsenal’s Reserve and Youth players continued their pre-season preparations with a 9-0 win over Hastings United this evening. A Jay Emmanuel-Thomas hat-trick, a brace from Luke Freeman and one each from Chuks Aneke, Oguzhan Ozyakup, Jernade Meade and Sanchez Watt sealed a comfortable win.

Banfield made four changes from the side that beat Woking 3-0 last week, with Shea, Hajrovic, Meade and Afobe all dropping out. There were first starts at this level for Charles-Cook and Galindo, while Yennaris and Freeman also came in.

ARSENAL: Charles-Cook; Yennaris, Bartley, Boateng, Henderson; Aneke, Özyakup, Galindo; JET, Watt, Freeman.

Arsenal started brightly against the Isthmian Division outfit, and could have taken the lead with just five minutes on the clock, when Freeman found Aneke in space, but the 18-year-old could only shoot at the ‘keeper.

The gulf in class was obvious right from the off, and when Freeman combined with Özyakup, Arsenal had their lead, and wouldn’t look back. Emmanuel-Thomas then wasted two superb chances after some quick foot work, before lashing a 35 yard effort miles over. However, he would make up for it in the closing stages of the half.

An excellent dribble around the Hasting’s defence allowed him to walk in goal number two. Jay got himself a second shortly after, with a well hit drive. 3-0 and total control.

Aneke should have made it four straight from the kick off, but his chip went over the bar. Yet the prospect would finish the half with a goal, when he lashed home in style.

Banfield switched things around at half time, bringing on Rhys Murphy for Boateng. The changes threatened to disrupt the flow, but Arsenal kicked on in their search for more goals.

Murphy hit the post, then Hastings thought they’d denied Emmanuel-Thomas a hat-trick with a brilliant last ditch tackle. However, the leggy forward would grab his third shortly after, smashing home an effort from the edge of the box. A truly superb effort.

There was no time to celebrate the goal, as Arsenal continued their hunt for more. They didn’t have to wait long, as Banfield’s boys grabbed two more in quick succession. First, Watt grabbed number six following a spilled Meade shot, then Özyakup unlocked the Hastings back four for Freeman. He made it seven with ease.

Second half sub Meade got goal number eight from Henderson’s corner, before Hastings almost embarrassed Charles-Cook on his debut. The rookie stopper managed to scramble the ball away, having had little to do all game. The ball was soon back up the other end, and was soon back in the Hastings net. Freeman with his brace. 9-0.

Despite a real desire to grab the 10th, it finished 9-0. All in all, an enjoyable work out.

Afobe Set For Cologne Run Out

Benik Afobe has been withdrawn from the Arsenal Reserve squad due to play Hastings United tonight. The 18-year-old is now poised to be included in the first-team for their clash with FC Cologne this weekend.

Afobe has been given the chance to impress after the club pulled him out of the England Under-20 squad last week. The news comes after Costa Rican forward Joel Campbell saw his transfer collapse, with Benik hoping to prove to Arsène Wenger that he doesn’t need the Sparissa youngster.

Campbell Set For Arsenal Medical

Joel Campbell will have a medical this evening ahead of the completion of his transfer to Arsenal, his father Humberto has confirmed.

The deal was all but sealed last night, when Richard Law met with both player and family following a rival bid from another Premier League team. Law managed to persuade the family to ignore that interest, and after increasing the initial £930,000 bid to over £1 million, all parties are happy.

Humberto Campbell confirmed the plans for a medical this evening, in an interview with La Prensa Libre.

“These tests will be in the Cima hospital and supervised by the people of Arsenal.” Everything is virtually ready.”

Campbell senior also confirmed Arsenal will be lodging a bid for a special talent work permit, but this may have to wait until after the Under 20 World Cup.

Larsson Advising Arsenal New Boy Olsson

Sebastian Larsson may have left the club in 2007, but the Arsenal Academy product still has an influence. The 26-year-old is offering advice to fellow Swede Kristoffer Olsson, as he begins his career with the Gunners.

Olsson kicks off his second week of training with the club today, following an unlikely transfer from IFK Norrköping. The deal came about after Kristoffer’s agent, Per Jonsson, who also represents Larsson, called Liam Brady to arrange a trial. Brady usually backs away from Swedish talent, but decided to take the youngster on a trial.

After two successful run outs, Olsson has joined the ranks. A keen Manchester United fan, the 16-year-old now pledges his allegiance to Arsenal, and believes he boasts the qualities the club seek in midfielders.

“My first touch is really good, but also my passing game. They say that I’m a “Arsenal type of player”, a little bit like Fabregas and Nasri.” he told Direkt Fotboll.

A chance meeting with Fabregas in the gym made Olsson realise how big the switch to Arsenal is. One player who knows all about working with Cesc, Seb Larsson, will now help to groom a potential successor.

“Seb is going to call me and give me some advice. The ones I’ve talked to here says that they like him very much when he was playing here. They say that I’m a bigger talent than he was at 16, but Seb gave his all always, and that’s why he has succeeded.”

His final word on the club?

“Arsenal feels like a family. There are no divas here, and that suits me perfect, and I will do everything to succeed here.”

Olsson will be part of a new look Under 18 side that kicks off their season against Barnsley.

Arsenal's Campbell Deal In Doubt

A Premier League rival has bettered Arsenal’s offer for Saprissa striker Joel Campbell, the players father has confirmed.

Arsenal agreed a fee and then terms on a five-year-contract last night, but the unknown English club moved this afternoon to offer Campbell a better package. The players father, Humberto, confirmed the news to La Nation, and says the family will meet tonight to decide on the next move.

“We got another very good offer from one of the great English teams, which is just as interesting in sporting terms to Arsenal, but also more economically.”

“I will meet now with my wife and together we will make the decision whether to sign with Arsenal, the other club, or wait for something else.”

Sparissa chairman Juan Carlos Rojas revealed last night that everything has been agreed with them, and that the only remaining detail was when Campbell would sign the contract.

Joel was absent from training with the Costa Rican Under 20 side today, as he bids to thrash out his future. A decision is expected shortly.

Arsenal Agree Campbell Fee With Saprissa

Arsenal have agreed a fee with Saprissa for striker Joel Campbell, according to president Juan Carlos Rojas.

Richard Law has been in Costa Rica over the weekend holding talks over the 19-year-old, and a fee of around £930,000 has been agreed. The deal was confirmed by Rojas on ADN Radio last night, before the players father revealed he expected the transfer to go through before Monday.

Humberto Campbell also said his son had agreed on a five year contract, and would wear the number 12 shirt.

Woking 0-3 Arsenal: Galindo Debuts In Easy Win

An Arsenal Reserve XI beat Woking FC 3-0 this evening, as the club’s second string youngsters played their first game of pre-season. An early own goal set the tone, before Chuks Aneke doubled the lead just before half time. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas wrapped the win up in the second half.

Henri Lansbury, Craig Eastmond and Gavin Hoyte all missed out through a lack of fitness, but Bolivian Samuel Galindo was included for the first time after moving from Real America last summer. He was joined on the bench by 41-year-old goalkeeper coach Tony Roberts, who was a late inclusion as James Shea’s back up.

ARSENAL: Shea; Hajrovic, Bartley, Boateng, Meade; Özyakup, Aneke, Henderson; Emmanuel-Thomas, Afobe, Watt.

Woking set about their task well in the opening stages, showing just why many tip them to win promotion from Blue Square South next season.

A selection of threatening long balls tested the mettle of the Arsenal defence, before the back pedalling Shea was forced to tip a dipping shot over the bar. Woking were having the better of it, but it was Arsenal who snatched the lead, when Emmanuel-Thomas’ corner was turned in for an own goal, despite Afobe trying to claim it as his own. 1-0.

The game lost its way towards half time, but the Afobe-Aneke combination that worked so many times for the Under 18’s, worked again. Benik played Chuks in on the edge of the box, and the powerful midfielder turned sharply and lashed the ball in to the corner. A brilliant move and an excellent goal. 2-0.

It was the final meaningful action of the half.

The second period saw Brislen-Hall, Yennaris, Murphy, Freeman and Galindo all come on, the latter for his Arsenal debut. Mass changes usually disrupt the flow, but Arsenal kicked on. Emmanuel-Thomas and Murphy both had shots saved, before Galindo’s mazy run resulted in a superb ball for Freeman, but he only found the ‘keepers chest despite being through one-on-one.

Woking threatened briefly late on, but the Cards folded when Emmanuel-Thomas finished where Freeman hadn’t to make it 3-0.

The full time whistle brought to an end a comfortable victory. Many of these players are expected to go on loan, but should he require them, Arsène Wenger has some good prospects in reserve.
