Musonda Leaves London After Arsenal Talks

Anderlecht midfielder Charly Musonda has now left London after holding talks with Arsenal. The 14-year-old is regarded as one of the brightest prospects in Belgium, and Liam Brady has moved in early.

Musonda and his agent met Arsène Wenger and took in Sunday’s 1-0 win over Manchester United at the Emirates, as Arsenal hope to convince the play maker on a move to England. His father, Charles Musonda, played for Anderlecht over 100 times and now works as a coach of their youth team.

Charly’s older brothers, Lamisha and Tyka, also play for the Brussels-based outfit, they’re not rated as highly. However, many speculate that all three may follow Romelu Lukaku into the first-team, sooner rather than later.

Musonda is an attacking midfielder who can also play wide on the right. He’s blessed with blistering pace, power and superb vision. It’s thought that Arsenal would like to secure a deal now, but would be happy for Charly to remain in Belgium until his 16th birthday, so to avoid Premier Academy League rules.

More news is expected shortly.

Carlos Vela started and played 75 minutes of West Brom’s 2-1 win over Aston Villa. Vela played the whole game on the right of a five man midfield, but did have two good chances to score on the left side of the pitch. The first he chipped over the bar from close range, and the second a free-kick that looped onto the roof of the net.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas was not in action this weekend, as Cardiff City play on Monday.

Henri Lansbury was not in action this weekend, as Norwich City play on Monday.

Vito Mannone missed Hull City’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace through injury.

Sanchez Watt came off the bench to play the final minute of Leeds United’s 1-0 win over Burnley. Watt almost scored with his first involvement, after he cut in from the right, but his shot from close range hit the side netting.

Craig Eastmond has now returned to Arsenal from his loan spell at Millwall after breaking his ankle.

Benik Afobe played the full 90 minutes in Huddersfield Town’s 3-2 win over Brighton. Afobe opened the scoring with a brilliant turn and shot inside the box, before putting them ahead again in the second half with another smart finish. Brighton equalised once more, but Afobe layed the ball off for Danny Ward to grab a late winner. Benik claimed the Man of the Match award, his fourth in four games.

Mark Randall was an unused substitute as Rotherham drew 2-2 with Aldershot Town.

Ryo Miyaichi missed Feyenoord 3-2 defeat to VVV-Venlo through illness.

Arsenal Complete Ferroli Cup Group Stages

Arsenal have wrapped up the group stages of the Ferroli Cup, but Steve Gatting’s boys need other results to go their way if they are to reach the semi-finals.

The Gunners kicked against AC Milan on Thursday evening, already knowing that Chelsea and Manchester City had suffered defeats to Italian opposition earlier in the day. In what proved to be a tight affair, two goals in five minutes from Austin Lipman then Chuba Akpom sealed a 2-0 win.

In the other game, Aspire Academy beat AC Sambonifacese 6-0. It meant a show down with the Qatar-based school of excellence to decide the group. Arsenal were missing Akpom through injury, and it tolled. Yet despite going behind twice, Lipman and Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill goals make it 2-2, only for Aspire to grab a late winner.

That result meant Arsenal went in today’s clash with AC Sambonifacese needing to win and hoping results elsewhere go their way. They did their bit, as Lipman scored again, in between strikes from Jack Jebb and Kristoffer Olsson.

That means Arsenal need AC Milan to beat the cash-backed Aspire by a huge goal difference, or, they could also make the semi-final as the best second place team in the competition. However, that would depend on results involving Hallas Verona and Juventus going their way. Both seem unlikely.

Man Utd 0-0 Arsenal: Vermaelen Shines In Draw

Arsenal wrapped up their Premier Reserve League season with a 0-0 draw against Manchester United this evening. The point sees the Gunners’ extend their lead at the top of the table, but second place Chelsea now have two games in hand.

Neil Banfield was able to call upon the experience of Thomas Vermaelen at centre half – he replaced the suspended Ignasi Miquel in a defensive reshuffle. Chuks Aneke returned from injury, while Sead Hajrovic was dropped from the squad altogether after his poor showing at the Dallas Cup.

ARSENAL: Shea; Angha, Boateng, Vermaelen, Brislen-Hall; Ebecilio, Özyakup; Murphy, Aneke, Henderson, Aliadière.

MAN UTD: Amos, W Brown, Wootton, Gill, Dudgeon, R Brown, Bébé, Fletcher, Norwood, Obertan, Brady

Arsenal began brightly in front of a handful of fans at Old Trafford, but it was United who created the early threat. A series of long balls were all aimed at the visitors’ back four, but the returning Vermaelen headed everything away. It was a commanding start from the Belgian.

After showing off his defensive abilities, Thomas then sprayed a series of passes forward, but Arsenal struggled for end product. Then came a moment of contention, when Boateng headed the ball beyond the on rushing Shea, who appeared to foul Obertan outside the area. The United fans appealed for a red card, but it wasn’t given.

There was a card moment later, though, as Aliadière was booked for diving. It summed up a terrible first half for the Frenchman. Arsenal had struggled to make chances despite dominating the play, and United almost took advantage in the closing stages of the half, as two shots from Norwood threatened Shea’s goal. However, it was 0-0 at the break.

The second half saw first-teamers Fletcher and then Bébé replaced in quick succession, but United stepped up their attacking threat. Obertan and then Tunnicliffe both had chances in the wide areas, but confident defending from Vermaelen and Özyakup denied any end product.

Deacon was then introduced and after going to 4-4-2, Arsenal looked more balanced. Then came another moment of controversy, when Aliadière was chopped down by Amos, only for the referee to give Aliadière as offside, despite the fact he latched onto a back pass. Vermaelen ran over and began remonstrating, only for the hosts to break. A fine covering block from substitute Wynter prevented a dangerous chance for Keane.

It was end-to-end in the closing stages, but then three minutes from time, United should have scored. A short-corner found Gill from close range, and his powerful header looked goal bound before an unbelievable save from Shea tipped it onto the cross bar. It was a stunning stop to deny a certain goal.

It was the final meaningful action of a forgettable save. Banfield’s boys know they’re unlikely to feature in the Premier Reserve League title hunt, but the return of the excellent Vermaelen make it a fruitful evening.

Arsenal Begin Ferroli Cup Hunt Against Milan

Arsenal kick off their Ferroli Cup campaign against AC Milan this evening, in the opening days show piece game. The tournament, in its 22nd year, is one of the most prestigious in youth football.

The club have been sending a team to compete in Verona since 2006, where a penalty shoot out loss in the final to Atalanta denied the Gunners a dream debut. However, they returned in 2008 and won the cup on spot kicks against Juventus, with trialist goalkeeper Sean McDermott saving and then scoring the winner.

The result saw Arsenal crowned as the first foreign team to win the trophy. It wasn’t the only prize picked up though; Jack Wilshere was named Player of the Tournament, and Luke Freeman claimed the top scorer prize.

After a number of group stage knock outs, Arsenal have sent one of their best squads in recent years, and are favourites to re-take the cup from last years winners Inter Milan. Ahead of the kick off, Young Guns caught up with the Ferroli Cup’s Head Press Officer Alessandro De Pietro.

Alessandro began by explaining the origins of the competition.

“The Ferroli Cup was founded in 1990 and in the first edition was dedicated to the Under 13 category and then moved to the current Under 15. The event was planned by the famous Ferroli Group, a world leader in the heating, air conditioning, whirlpool bath and heated towel rails in collaboration with A.C. Sambonifacese, a club who plays in the fourth level of Italian football. After the first editions, the tournament added more and higher quality teams, with the participation of the best Italian clubs first and then with the presence of many foreign clubs from Europe.”

He then went on to explain the process of selecting and inviting Arsenal, and their history of taking part.

“Arsenal took part in the Ferroli Cup for the first time in 2006, when they reached the final, but lost on penalties against Atalanta. Wojciech Szczęsny was the goalkeeper, on trial. After the tournament, Arsenal decided to sign him. Szczęsny was awarded as the best goalkeeper of the tournament.”

“Arsenal immediately accepted the invitation at the Cup Ferroli, convinced by the quality of participating teams and of the organization. Liam Brady has also visited Verona, and the tournament organiser Ettore Paolini often gets invited to London to watch some Arsenal matches  in the Premier League. Arsenal, among other things, was the first foreign club to win the Ferroli Cup in 2008.”

The likes of Szczęsny and Wilshere are the most recent names to have starred at the Ferroli Cup, but Rafael van der Vaart, Johnny Heitinga, Fabio Quagliarella, Daniele De Rossi, Giampaolo Pazzini and Riccardo Montolivo are just a few of those who used the competition to cut their teeth, but apart from finding new players, what else can Arsenal learn?

“Arsenal took to the Ferroli Cup with a bold new tone and enthusiasm. They understand youth culture and fair play. It was very good for Arsenal to face and adapt to Italian football at youth level that only look at results and not the quality of the game. Liam Brady has always argued that at the Ferroli Cup his boys have found the right opportunity to grow and have a very severe and constructive test rather than facing others teams in English football.”

Kick off against AC Milan is at 8pm UK time, with further games against Aspire Academy and A.C. Sambonifacese to follow. You can keep up to date with the news and scores via our Twitter feed.

Exclusive: Vermaelen Set To Face Man Utd

Thomas Vermaelen is expected to start tomorrows Premier Reserve League fixture against Manchester United, Young Guns can confirm. The Belgian has been missing since September, when he suffered Achilles tendon damage and needed surgery.

Vermaelen returned to training around a month ago, where was initially working on his own with fitness coach Tony Colbert. However, the 25-year-old has made rapid progress, and rejoined the first-team group a week and a half ago. Arsenal are planning a series of ‘behind closed doors’ friendlies, as the United clash is the final Reserve league game of the campaign.

Thomas is expected to make his first-team come back in the closing stages of the season, should he suffer no set backs.

Arsenal Trial Servette Youngster Mbabu

Arsenal have added Servette youngster Kevin Mbabu to their squad for this weeks Ferroli Cup. The 16-year-old is the latest in a long line of trialists who will have the chance to earn a transfer at the prestigious Italian tournament.

Steve Gatting’s side last won the competition in 2008, when Sean McDermott saved and then scored a penalty in a shoot out against Juventus. The Gunners begin this years round of games on Thursday, against AC Milan, before further games with Aspire Academy and A.C. Sambonifacesce.

Mbabu is a highly rated defensive midfielder, who is equally at home at centre back or right back. He follows in the footsteps of Philippe Senderos, who joined Arsenal from Servette in 2003. Kevin is also a Swiss international, who scored on his debut against Belgium earlier this year.

He is expected to go straight into the lineup for the first game against AC Milan, along with new signings Kristoffer Olsson and Leander Siemann. However, Arsenal aren’t the only club interested. Mbabu enjoyed a trial with Manchester United recently, and they remain keen.

You can follow more build up to the Ferroli Cup tomorrow.

Charlton Hopeful Of Ansah Deal

Charlton Athletic are hopeful of agreeing a loan deal for Arsenal striker Zak Ansah. The England Under 17 international is expected to move to the The Valley next season.

Ansah is still finding his feet at Arsenal after signing scholarship terms last summer, but the Addicks, who are managed by Zak’s Godfather Chris Powell, are hoping to seal a loan move.

It’s not yet clear whether the deal would happen at the start of the campaign, or later on, but his father confirmed he is set to make the move across London next year in an interview with the Charlton match day program.

“Zak’s at Arsenal until he’s 19 and we’re pleased with his progress. Our plan is that he is strong enough and good enough next year to be able to come on loan to The Valley.”

Andy Ansah, a former professional footballer turned TV personality, is a life long Charlton fan and enjoys a close relationship with manager Powell. Zak would follow in the foot steps of Luke Freeman and Benik Afobe, who both virtually bypassed Reserve team football to play in League One.

What Does The Dallas Cup Mean For Arsenal?

Arsenal will set out on the long journey home from America this evening, after completing the club’s first visit to the US in the modern era. A semi-final defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt ended their hopes of winning the Dallas Cup, but both players and coaches admit they they’ve learnt a lot from the experience.

You need luck on your side to win any competition, and when it came to it, the Gunners had little. The last minute injuries to key players Luke Freeman and Josh Rees meant they went into the final game massively under strength, and it tolled. However, despite the defeat, Steve Bould and Neil Banfield can be proud of the efforts the boys made.

The experience the players gained in playing against different styles, physiques and attitudes to the game will stand them in good stead for the future. A number of players, such as Freeman, Deacon, Henderson, Angha and Martínez continued to add to their growing reputation, while the young and improving Rees, Ebecilio, Ansah and Monakana also turned in good shifts. All in all, this looks another good crop.

The summer will bring decisions on the futures a select few, including Oğuzhan Özyakup and George Brislen-Hall, who are looking increasingly likely to leave. That said, loan spells for Freeman, Henderson and one or two others will help push them onto another level.

Mostly importantly though, the Dallas Cup has paved the way for future Arsenal involvement in America. The large turn out of fans, despite it being an Under 19 team, was impressive. The players and coaching staff have both commented on how much they’ve enjoyed the setup, and with a growing number of supporters groups and interested from Stateside Gooners, it makes more sense for Arsenal to continue to explore that market, as opposed to the Asian one.

All in all, the Dallas Cup 2011 has been a sound experience for all connected with the club. The job now if for Banfield to use the Frankfurt defeat as inspiration for his sides final Premier Reserve League game of the season, against Manchester United.
